Running Disney Half Marathon with MS

I am running for Team MSAA at the Disney Marathon weekend. I am planning to do the half and Disney is tough because the walking areas change texture so much. I do have issues with my feet and legs at times. I am wondering if others that are still running have tips and tricks. This is me from the MSAA post on the race: support.mymsaa.org/site/Mes...

That's wonderful! And inspiring. I'm not a runner, but my hubby has run 22 marathons and we've lost track of how many 1/2 marathons, 12 & 10K runs. It's always suggested to have a high protein breakfast, start hydrating a couple of days ahead. If you can & it's offered along the run, grab some water or juice. Carry a couple of gels or gu's. It's so important to keep up your electrolytes. Let us know how your run goes. (Love the picture!)

Thanks so much. I have run four half marathons. Most of them before I was diagnosed with MS.

Your husband sounds like he really loves running. Great tips

He did all of that after age 50, now at 75, he's now golfing twice a week. He had to have his neck fused and that doc told him to quit running, because it would continue to deteriorate his spine and knees and hip joints.

Too bad he had to quit running. Awesome that he took on so many miles though

Thanks. Fundraising like crazy, training and trying to stay positive.

I didn't consider the surfaces at Disney when I signed up, but then again, I have MS and I can trip over nothing.

That's cool! Good luck!

Wear a good pair of socks and shoes that are already broke in or you will get really bad blisters. Another thing you might try is wearing knee high nylons under your socks. They help prevent blisters and help keep legs energized a little longer.

I’ve run Disney full marathon a half dozen times. Last time was probably 2006. I don’t know if the course has changed but a lot of on/off highway ramps with embankments that would make it rough for me now. Otherwise I don’t recall too much uneven ground.

Crowds, esp. at the start would be difficult re. footing and tripping.

A MS PT who researches exercise in people with MS said, take freq. walk breaks to allow your body to cool.

I wish you the best of luck 👍👍👍

I qualified for Boston on one of the Disney marathons. I was a 8 min/miler...now I’m lucky (truly) to run 2.5 miles in 50 min. And it feels like I’ve run a marathon. But couldn’t even do that before Ocrevus.

Thanks for all the info. Congrats on qualifying for Boston in the years before, that is a huge accomplishment.

Hopefully it will go well. I run 10 min miles on my good days, most I am 11 min miles though. I have numbness and pain in my feet that slows me some but I can still go so I am trying.

That’s amazing! I’m so impressed that you are able to run the marathon. I wish you the very best luck that day. Please take care of yourself and stop when/if you must. Your health is the most important. That’s a great picture of you and Mickey😊

Thanks so much. That picture was from a wonderful trip just a few years ago.
