In the morning I would look out my front window and see a male or female cardinal, some days both of them are present chirping in the morning air. It is good way to start the day, four days ago there was a young bird with them. It was cover with feathers but only could fly about 3 feet. I looked for the nest feeling it had fallen out was unableble to locate the nest. For the next 4 days I watch the young bird flapping his wings building up strength . One of the parents was always close to the young bird, my wife I observe them bringing food to the bird. Every day the bird would increase the distance it flew slowly getting stronger and flying higher. By the fourth day it was flying around our yard still mom and dad were close. I checked this morning unable to find the birds my hope is that all is good with them and they are singing in another yard, I admit I miss the birds I really like looking and the male with his bright red head.

Hidden What a treat that you observed! I too, would feel a little melancholy not witnessing this little bird learning to fly, under the watchful eye of his parents, anymore.
I love those birds too!
I know they like black oil sunflower seeds and will come to get those if you put them out.
And a bonus, with sunflower seeds you can also attract squirrels and mice! The squirrels have gnawed the edges of my bird feeders to get at the sunflower seeds, and the mice carry the fallen seeds to eat in the privacy of the porch chairs. (And if I don't remember to take the feeders down at night, the bear will do it for me!) My porch has become a regular communal dining hall.
Yikes!
I hope you don't have to walk far to put the feeder away!
Always walk with someone slower in bear country. That's the best advice I've got.
As long as the bear stays off the porch, we should be good! Once in Yellowstone, my cabin mate and I left the door open and a bear came in. I was in my bunk, reading, threw a hairbrush at him, and he turned around and left quickly. We kept a box of graham crackers in our cabin and that's probably what attracted him. However, a bear entered another employee's cabin when she stepped out. When she came back in, he left through the window...much excitement there! The bears here are not so comfortable around people. Too many dogs and hunters!
I love watching the birds. Thanks for your story. Sometimes MS gives us the gift of time to do those things.
We have hummingbirds and feeders outside of our kitchen window. And a feeder in the backyard. There used to be six of them. Now there’s two boys and two girls. They come up to the window, wave at us then go back to the feeder. I almost had one of them land on my outreached hand. 😊👍
