What is the Tysabri rebound effect when discontinuing use?
Tysabri: What is the Tysabri rebound... - My MSAA Community
Tysabri
When I was diagnosed with stage four cancer ♋️, I had to go off Tysabri for surgery, radiation and chemo treatment. About three months I had a major relapse 😖. After four months I went to Aubagio and has turned out well 👍. My oncologist at that time did not know effects of just stopping Tysabri 🤬. Needless to say I got a new one 🙏😉. Ken 🐾🐾
thank you. I have been on Tysabri for 18 months and will be going off in the next few months. I never heard about the rebound until now. The thought of a relapse scares me.
out of curiosity why are you stopping? Change to a stronger DMT I guess.
Truthfully, I don't know. I have been on Tysabri for at least 3 plus years. I have such great results that I haven't gone off it. I have had no new lesions. I'm sorry I couldn't be any help.
I think your doc may want to take you off of it because of the chance of PML go up after 2 years of being on Tysabri. Fount this info (scroll down the page). There are more reason but the 2 year mark has always stuck out to me...
Your risk of getting PML is higher if you:
have received TYSABRI for a long time, especially for longer than 2 years
Tysabri works by blocking something called alpha-4 integrin, which is used by your white blood cells to get into the brain. While these thing are blocked, your reactive wb cells are just circulating, waiting. Once the tysabri is gone, those cells sometimes will enter the brain, causing massive damage. Treating with other drugs to kill off the wb cells before the tysabri fully wears off will prevent this rebound effect. Tysabri is a really fast-acting, effective drug, but it prevents your immune system from monitoring for the JC virus in the brain, eventually leading to PML.
