Saw an article today that seems to confirm my recent experience. The opening line is "A specially tailored program focused on balance and eye-movement exercises can help multiple sclerosis (MS) patients improve balance, dizziness, fatigue, and quality of life, according to a study published in the journal Neurology."
I struggle with nystagmus, balance and fatigue amongst other things. Last summer I decided to see if I could do something to improve my situation. I'm was tired of the falls and my right knee can't take another one.
I believe I've had some improvements over all from losing some weight and from the balance and strengthening exercises I've been doing. It seems like this study says I'm on the right track. If I could find and incorporate some eye movement exercises I totally would.
Beems seems to stand for Balance and Eye-Movement Exercises for People With Multiple Sclerosis according to the article. These exercises were developed by the University of Colorado School of Medicine. If they are still studying them then maybe they haven't published them in detail yet. The last sentence in the article gives me the idea that they aren't available. I don't know if they will allow participation in future studies outside of the Colorado area. If they did, I'd love to participate.
One of the researchers listed is also the medical director of the Rocky Mountain MS Center in Colorado. That center has a lot of innovative stuff going on for MS patients.
Hi Jesmcd2 ! The balance exercises I do involve a plastic board called Simply Fit. (Don't laugh but I saw it on Shark Tank!! LOL!) Its supposed to improve balance and I think it has for me in certain situations. It has for sure strengthened my legs. I can walk further than before I started using it. BUT I still get to a point when walking where my leg muscles seem to weaken, my balance goes wonky and I can't walk in a straight line to save my life. It hasn't helped my balance in situations like washing my hair in the shower. (When I close my eyes, my balance starts to fail.) It also hasn't helped my problems with going up stairs. Sigh. Still a work in progress.
Raingrrl do you have a shower chair and bars????😕 If not get them! Please!
I don't do well with my new braces either. It's a work in progress, as you say! 😄 and steps? Hahaha yea I found out I can't get on the second step of the step ladder with these things on!😡😐
I could sure use so help in these areas. We moved some stuff from storage Sat. When we got home I was so tired that I fell in the kitchen on a stool because my balance was so bad. My right hip and leg are so sore and bruised I can barely sit. I’ve been thru physical therapy and I helped the strength in my legs but didn’t help balance.
