Rash and MS

Hello,

I started getting rash on both arms about a year or so ago, and just recently I noticed it only comes around when I have a flare up. I've seen googling around that it could be from medication but I'm currently not on any medication. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced a rash with a flare up?

I have not with flares, but I do when I get any viral nasty. I don't know if it's the same thing as what you have. It is usually on my upper arms and back of neck to shoulders. I take Benadryl at night for it, but I'm not sure it helps. It was once referred to as "serum sickness", a type 3 allergic reaction, I believe. Our immune systems are all tricked out from MS, so I wouldn't be shocked to hear this can happen during flares too! Usually lasts about 3 days for me.

My brother (no MS) also gets a rash with any virus.

Hello Dpaige! And yup, I have one on my upper arms, neck, and chest. it's red and splotchy and feels hot to the touch, especially after I get out of the shower! I haven't noticed it until the past couple months or so, thought it was from the hot water or the change in temperatures/seasons?? hrmm, maybe not......

Hmmm interesting. I've had another type of splotchy rash on my back soon after my diagnosis. I really feel it could be MS related, one way or another. Have you brought it up to a dr before? I'm just afraid of my neuro laughing at me instead of entertaining it

Does the rash itch, Dpaige ? What happens when you are in a flare? If you're put on steroids does the rash disappear? Sorry I don't have an answer for you. I started getting rashes about a year and a half ago-no rhyme or reason. Docs thought it was an allergic reaction, so I've gone off all meds, changed lotions and soaps, but none of that made a difference. Gabapentin helps the itching-even when I have no red bumpy rash. I'd be interested in hearing whatever you find out. 💕

So sorry to everyone, I Wasn't expecting many, if any, responses.

But yes, this rash itches a lot. I've never been allergic to anything or have ever had an adverse reaction to anything. When I flare up (at least, what I think is a flare up cause at 22 I'm still figuring it out) I get bad nerve pain, EVERYWHERE. As well as muscle pain to the point where I have a hard time getting up and walking (too sore, too stiff). I also used to and sometimes still get patchy dry rashes on my back that seemed to go away with vinegar. I have an appointment on Wednesday and I'll be sure to mention it to my neuro and share his opinion 😊 Hopefully I'll get SOME insight. Have you mentioned it to your dr?

Please let us know what your doctor says on Wednesday, Dpaige . The dry skin patch is interesting. It almost sounds like you have something else going on there. As for me, yes, my neuro knows. She and my primary care doc are the ones who had me go off my meds to see if they were the cause. Because the gabapentin helps, it appears to be a nerve-related issue, but it hasn't been confirmed. I hope your doc has an answer for you on Wednesday. 💕
