You might consider renting a scooter. I considered it when I thought my son wanted to do college visits. However, he decided he did not want to go on any college visits. I hope you find something to help so that you can go on the college visits with your boys.
Karen-x , given that you are traveling with your own power supply (in the form of able-bodied young men), I would think that a folding, conventional wheelchair might suffice very well. Harbor Freight has a very good conventional wheelchair for about $115 (ask me how I know). Because such a chair folds compactly, you'd also be able to travel with it, and would not have to endure the expense+hassle of renting a power wheelchair, in each place that you go. This way, you'll have an easy mobility solution for the outings which exceed your walking abilities.
Here's a link to the HF chair:

Christopher, that sounds perfect and much less expensive that I figured. Wonder if insurance will cover if my neuro prescribes?
Thanks for the Harbor Freight info! My husband gets tools and such there, but I never would have guessed they carried wheelchairs.
GasLight Karen-x That is a good deal. Just don't forget about craigslist or the goodwill and salvation army thrift stores. I am a huge fan of the goodwill. It is date night around here. desert, then the goodwill. That way we don't feel bad about spending money. Followed my a disinfectant bath of purel in the car!
Even better! Thanks!!
Hi Karen,
Sounds like you need wheels of some kind. Everyone has a preference on this - some people prefer electric scooter, as it can be run completely independently. You can hire the folding standard carer pushed wheelchair or a self propelling version. I would want to test drive the self propelled type to see if I could handle it, as I prefer to be in control ! ( Mrs Feisty Independent ! ) I have some arm power issues so would need to know if I could cope. You can use your feet to help move about in it too and if your arms do get tired or you struggle with upward slopes someone can step in and take over pushing if necessary : ) So it's a matter of preference and limb capability, really. Hope you can find something at reasonable cost that suits : )

Hi Karen x
You are a Mom after my own heart! And you definitely don't need to miss out on this Important time in your boy's lives!
My advice, Look into a scooter. I got one years back,my insurance even paid for it! I used it from anything like trick or treating, shopping at the mall,Disney, college tours etc.
Mine is a smaller one, fits in a car trunk...They have people who can help pick what's best for you.
Good luck,!
Karen-x surely the colleges need to be ADA compliant? Perhaps check with each college about what they have available. We have motorized golf carts that can accompany groups of students on orientation tours.
Karen-x Have a Wonderful Time! It's very special!π
Just don't over do it.βΊ
Karen-x There are light weight "transfer" chairs. They are much lighter than standard wheel chairs. Some have the big back wheels so you can push yourself, if you are not fatigued, and some just have 4 smaller wheels. My sister got one through Walmart, online, it was not expensive. She will walk, pushing it, when she feels like walking, that way it helps with her balance. When she gets tired my brother-in-law pushes her. It folds up easily. She loves it.
4 wheeled walker
Rent a scooter or power wheelchair, I did that on cruise to Alaska and when we just went to San Diego.
