Flying with walking poles

I have MSA and have found walking poles to be helpful with my terrible balance and slow, shuffling walk.

I’d like to take the poles with me when I holiday in Greece in June and ideally use them in the airport. However, I can’t find a definitive answer as to whether or not walking poles can travel hand luggage. Does anyone know?

I’ve seen some stuff to suggest that they can’t (even if they are the collapsible type). If that’s true, does anyone know why? Thanks very much and I do hope that some of you can and will enjoy summer breaks in 2025.

Thank you for replying so quickly, Freda. I have used airport assistance with variable success, but struggle to get to the toilet on the plane without a mobility aid. How do you manage that?

my connection with this site is as carer for my husband who died ten years ago so my personal coping strategies after a stroke are not really relevant but iknow that my cqllapsible walking poles are too big to fit IN hand luggage.

if you ask for help in good time "they" will usually find a solution if you smile nicely and are prpared to sacri fice a little dignity

If the flight is not too long you may be able to bypass the loo with high capacity incontinence pants....you will need to experiment to makesure you feel confident....

Thank you so much for all these tips, Freda. Sounds like preparation is the key! So glad you stayed on this site as your experience is invaluable

The reply triggered a memory that I purchased collapsed walking sticks for my trip to Iceland in 2022. A great option.

we did the Inca trail and were permitted to strap them to our hand luggage. I think it depends on the airline as they could be viewed as a weapon! I agree that special assistance is fantastic. Enjoy your break!

Well done you! I’m not that adventurous

I’m sure if I used a pole as a weapon, I’d fall over with the effort! I bet you are right though . Thanks
