Dribbling

For a few months now I've started dribbling and I have to tap my lips dry now and again.. Recently it's got much worse. In the morning I can literally scrape this dried stuff off my face and lips and depending on how I've been lying, off my throat and shoulder. I could literally hold a folded tissue between my lips to soak it all up. My lips are dry and cracked and the sides of my mouth have split open a d bleed occasionally

Can't wait to get home so thst i ca n put on some / lypsyl/lipstick/vaseline.

Has anyone else suffered with this problem and did you find a solution to the problem? Thanks

Suex

Hi Sue

My husband has problems with dribbling. He was initially prescribed Hyoscine patches by our GP and at first there were signs of improvement. After a few months his dribbling got worse and affected his speech and made him feel self conscious. The Parkinson's nurse wrote to our GP saying Hyoscine was not recommended for patients with MSA as it can exacerbate the symptoms. She recommended Glycopyrronium bromide. He tried this for several months but there has been no improvement - the dribbling has got considerably worse. He has now been given an appointment at the Botox clinic in April to help manage his hypersalivation. Hopefully this will help improve his symptoms - if nothing else he might start looking youngerl😂Good luck and I hope you find something that helps.

Take care x

All of those things sound horrible. I think I'll stick with blotting and vaseline. Thanks for the info though at least I know what I don't want!Suex

Hello Sue.

There's a really good fact sheet on the MSA Trust web site all about saliva control. You can find it here msatrust.org.uk/wp-content/...

Jackie suffers from soreness around the mouth and vaseline seems to keep it under control. the hospital should be able to provide you with that...if not kick up a fuss!

I hope this helps,

All best, Ian x

Thanks IanI've got it all over the house so I'll be OK once once I get out of this damn place. The hospital don't keep it any more and didn't know what to give me instead!! Doesn't fill you with confidence does it!

hi, yes Jon suffers with this.

We have been using amantodine eye drops which work well. Recently it worsened and we are trying hyoscine patches which the two seem to work well.

We are trying to get Botox

Oh yes we have big problems with dribbling, Graham is on Atropine eye drops but they are not great, either no difference or mouth and tongue so dry he can hardly talk. We tried the patches but they did not work, Botox has been looked into, but have been told that they will only offer that when swallowing has stopped. Constantly dabbing mouth when out, and at home sometimes very wet shirts!! Seems to flow more first thing in the morning and evenings.

I was just about to contact my husband's speech therapist when I saw your post, and the replies. Boris has huge problems with dribbling, or drooling. He is on Atropine eye drops but they don't work. Except on the rare 'good' day, he constantly holds tissues to his mouth to soak up the saliva. It's now so bad he is wearing an apron all day as by the early afternoon the front of his sweaters are soaked.

Last time he saw the speech therapist she went through the various options, and the side effects, all of which sounded so awful he decided against them. But given that the problem is getting so much worse, we're going to revisit them.

my husband has been prescribed Atropine Eye Drops… yes you have read that right 😁 He puts a couple of drops on his tongue to stop the build up of saliva and this works temporarily and he also has an appointment for Botox in a few weeks time. Take care x

I'm so glad you explained it. I was wondering how putting drops in your eyes would stop over production of saliva.
