Bathroom adaption

Good morning, I pray this message finds everyone full of enthusiasm for the day ahead.

My husband has MSA (C), and we need to adapt our bathroom to meet his needs. We need a wash/dry toilet and I’m wondering if anyone has experience of these? It also needs to work with a shower wheelchair (which I don’t have at the moment). There are so many to choose from.

Any advice, will be very much appreciated.

We have a Geberit wash/shower toilet and it has worked really well. One word of warning…you need the medical version if you want to use it with a shower chair. You can make the retail version work however it’s a bit clunky. The medical version is usually less expensive anyway and VAT exempt.

If you are making adaptations to create a wet room, consider fitting a pocket sliding door - makes so much more space in the bathroom. If you search there’s an early post from me with photos.

I always say plan for the worst and get the Occupational Therapist involved.

A wet room is best as you can shower and wash a lot easier as you have more room and it will be safer in the long run.

My sus now uses a bath room chair ( commode) for moving around and washing as it works best.

we also had the geberit 8000 care toilet and a shower chair which was ordered by the OT and had to be measured and made to the correct height. You can have to toilet fitted at 3 different heights and so need the shower chair to match, not the standard size. Our has to be readjusted but I can’t remember what it was that wasn’t correct, neither can I quite remember what make it was! Sorry. But it did make life do much better. We had a ceiling track hoist to get from bed to shower chair when he couldn’t manage the molift standing aid, which was great!

The geberit toilet is so much prettier that the closomat! I don’t tend to use the wash function now myself, but the toilet itself still looks stylish in the wet room.

We self funded but the Neuro team OT was really happy to advise and check things like turning space and offer advice. And there should be an independent living team at your local council as well who will advise even when they aren’t funding it

I have a wash/dry toilet and find it essential. I can still manage with a shower chair but the occupational therapist has offered me a shower chair so maybe they could provide it for you? My bathroom is a wet room and at the moment I can use it independently 🤞

We have just had fitted an AKW rise and fall toilet. We had a Geberit one before my wife’s condition got worse and had to move her downstairs to a new bedroom and bathroom. It is fully wash and dry but uniquely the whole toilet moves up and down to assist access onto and off the toilet pan. It looks good and is cheaper than the Geberit. They have a huge showroom near Worcester with some really great accessible kit. As regards the commode we don’t use one as transferring using a Sara Stedy is much easier and safer

Thank you everyone, really useful comments. We are really desperate for a wet room and are self funding an extension and wet room. We are also going to need a wash wipe toilet. Any other useful tips for essential things in a wet room?

Hello

We have a body blower for easier drying. It does make it less exhausting for Dave. We have a Gerberit toilet and from what I have read on here we have the wrong sort. A case of wish I had asked you all first. The shower chair we have was supplied by the NHS following an assessment from the Palliative Care Team OT and Dave has a perching stool too. The council/social services OT helped us with the planning although, like you, we funded it and used our own builder. Most important is non slip flooring, especially when wet. We have AKW folding door with a shower curtain over and a pocket door to increase space. Good luck. I hope you get all the bits you need.
