Sedation issue

Hi my husband has been in hospital overnight twice in last 2 weeks to have PEG fitted. 1st visit they couldn't do it as no-one told us to stop his copidogrel medication. 2nd time tried to do it but couldn't because of stomach anatomy. Now to go back in as day patient to have RIG done as alternative method. My question is around sedation. He chose sedation over throat spray but he's been very tired and lethargic since they tried to do it on Wednesday. He is also on antibiotics for silent urine infection which started prior to procedure. Is sedation problematic for MSA patients?

it sounds as if this is becoming a bit of a saga!

My husband did get his PEG fitted at one go, but they did struggle to site it and it was right on the front of his abdomen which is not quite the usual place. But as with most things the reaction to the sedation can be different than in people without MSA. With any intervention there is usually an effect like an increase of some symptoms which will slowly improve, but the fact that it didn’t get done and he has to face another procedure won’t be helping his mental state either. In our experience the PEG was the most wonderful and helpful intervention and Geoff stayed well for much longer afterwards because he was getting the appropriate medication, hydration and nutrition without the physical and emotional effort of try to eat and drink enough and the fear of choking.

I hope that the RIG goes better and that this little extra bump in the already very uneven road is soon behind you.

Yes has been a saga - especially since we had to wait all day to see if bed was available. Got told at 6.30 pm! So going in at 7.30pm at -8 ° wasn't pleasant experience. Thanks for hope that will make things better

Hi my husband has had the RIG fitted( 12 months ago now) . He also went in to the PEG but they found he has a hernia. He did not get sedated. He does experience tiredness when he has any kind of infection so it may well possibly, be a coincidence that it is happening at the same time. Best of luck with the RIG.. it has been great for Phil x

A PEG is inserted using telescope down the food pipe. A RIG is done using xrays to determine insertion site

Thank. I still don't fancy either.!!I've got loads of adhesions following 7 mjor operation and gawd know how many minor. Technically I'm supposed to have another seriously major op but surgeons in our 2 local ops who did the 2 last ops have both refused to re-enter "that minefield "! The 3rd I was sent to refused on the grounds that I was too fragile and would never survive it.

I've a funny feeling no-one would like to look into my stomach again anyway
