My husband has been struggling coughing up thick and sticky mucus day and night. Hospice care prescribed GUAIFENESIN but mucus is stickier and more often coughing up. Breathing and possible changes in MSA factsheet suggesting to take Carbocysteine. Is anyone have same problem? Does Carbocysteine work? Any recommendation?
Ask the doctor about the possibility of trying Ambroxol, it's an old drug.

In addition, I was told to use a home nebulizer with Combivent
After nebulizing, it would be much easier to cough any secretion out
In my case the phelgm had to be suctioned out - the idea is to suction till the chest is dry
My family was taught how to use the suction machine.
They would insert an airway guide to navigate the catheter in
Also, I was advised to chose a softer brand catheter. Its easier on the throat

I suffered with this for a long time couldn’t cough it up ,them a kindly Dr in the hospital told me to get myself a nebuliser and nebula's, I did and haven’t looked back since so far no more hospital admissions with pneumonia and the mucus is much thinner and easier to cough up, ask to see a physio who can teach you to cough it up properly all the best hope this helps

My understanding is there are different medicines according to whether the phlegm is thin or thick. Whether it is coming up from the chest (carbocysteine) or down from the sinuses, or pooling in the throat because of a swallowing issue. (Hyosceine patch/nacsys effervescent tablets) We had advice from a speech therapist as well because they specialise in this issue in the UK.

My husband uses Carbocysteine and a cough assist machine twice a day . These both really help .
Thank you Nicky for your advice. I did consult with Hospice Care Doctor, who visited Richard (same as your husband's name) two days ago. He advised me that we can not get Carbocysteine here in US under medicare. He will look into other medicine for Richard and arrange nebuliser for him. Thank you.
Hi I’ve only just seen your post. I don’t have MSA, my husband was diagnosed with it last year but now his diagnosis has changed to PSP. However, I take Carbosystene because I have asthma and was making a lot of thick sticky mucus which was hard to clear and it often felt like I was choking. For me it certainly helps a lot. I only take a small amount each night but it does the trick.
Hello, Thank you for your advice. I have consulted with our Hospice Care doctor. He prescribed to my husband Richard, Acetylcysteine for inhaler 4 times a day. I also purchased AirPhysio to do his lung physio exercise. 3 days past and it seems his cough frequency and state got bit better. In US Carbosystene is not under prescription drug. He spit larger quantity of mucus every time he spit out now. So they are working. I hope. You take care of your self too. Kazumi
