Wheelchairs for WAV

My husband with MSA is struggling to get in and out of car and so am considering buying a Peugeot Partner wheelchair adapted car. He is comfortable enough in our standard issue low backed wheelchair for a short trip. However we sometimes need to drive 2hours+ to visit his 97 year old mum and I think we need a more comfortable wheelchair with a higher back to support his head for these journeys. Does anyone have any suggestions re wheelchairs and vans?

HiIf you husband recieves the highest rate of pip or DLA then look at motability as they do cars for you for the motorbilty component, fully insured, taxed and serviced including wavs.

I have a new car for sue every 3 years.

Look at motability.co.uk

Hi. We bought a fiat Doblo with an In-front adaptation by Lateral Designs. Initially we had a lightweight Karma wheelchair and I bought a headrest to fit it for travelling in the car, but if yours is from the wheelchair service then they probably won’t allow you to add a headrest. They later supplied us with a Karma 515 tilt in space wheelchair which comes with its own removable headrest.

This worked well for us right up to Geoff’s last week.

Hi DianeThank you so much. This info is so helpful. I hadn't seen the front seated WAVs which obviously is more sociable. The wheelchair also looks amazing. Was your husband comfortable in it for several hours at a time?

At the moment my husband can still transfer to a chair and even walk a little in the house with a walker but I am not sure how long this will be for, especially as he also has an arthiritc knee that collapes without warning!

I am sorry for your loss and it is so kind of you to continue to offer your expertise

Best wishes

Sharon

I had a Peugeot Partner WAV for my husband. I found it very easy to operate and he was always comfortable in the back. We were fortunate that we got it on the Motability scheme. I highly recommend this vehicle. Paul was in a large reclining wheelchair and I am a disabled 5 foot lady and had no difficulty with loading him. Good luck in your choice of vehicle.

Hi Thanks so much for this. I have driven the Peugeot Parnter WAV and liked it. Nick was also quite happy in the back but would definitely need a large reclining wheelchair but am trying to decided on the most suitable one. Which did your husband have and would you recommend it?
