I have had Myelodysplasia together with Thrombocythemia since at least 1998. My then GP had noticed that my platelets were out of range after a blood test for something completely unrelated. She sent me to hospital where I had endless tests in various departments and by process of elimination it was decided that it was ET. I remember very clearly the day when I presumed I was being discharged now that they had found the reason for the high count. "Oh no. We will be seeing a lot of you for a very long time" said the Consultant. How true! My blood count is closely monitored and I have a bone marrow biopsy every 2 years. My haematologist and her team are excellent and very reassuring but I do get anxious waiting for the biopsy result in case fibrosis has started. So far so good.
