A large swelling on the back of my hand between my knuckles which is blue and red, has anyone else ever experienced similar?

This appeared today in front of my eyes, my colleague was horrified as was I. I rang the haematologist nurse who sent me for a blood test and my counts are excellent. Anyone any ideas what could have been going on here? It still remains this evening as I type but not as swollen.

Hello Mallard

I get that sometimes - I understand it is bleeding from a vessel below the skin and it will take a few days to fade away. I have ET. The bleeding is nothing to worry about but I agree with you that it looks very alarming and horrible.

Thanks Isidora its good to know others have experienced this too. I have ET and I am on Hydroxy. Its the first time it has ever happened to me and I freely admit it really scared me. I won't worry so much next time it happens. Thank goodness for this forum, I didn't know where to turn.

It sounds like a hematoma. Goggle it. I get them but without change in skin color. Mine hurt.

Hi BessedWithSix thank you. I googled hematoma and I also came across another name for it ecchymosis. I don't want to appear morbid but it did cross my mind that I am lucky it is just the back of my hand, could these appear anywhere in the body and if so is there anything we can do to prevent them?

Yes. They can be any where. I'm not sure if prevention. My doc says they come with disease. I get more when counts are up.

Thanks BlessedWithSix just another symptom to add to the list. hey ho. x

Hello Mallard I too had a similar swelling on the back of my hand (the whole hand and 1" high) shortly after ET diagnosis 6 years ago. Gently bumped back of hand and as you said came up in minutes. Dr said pooled blood and it faded away over 4 weeks. Just have to be that much more careful now. Best wishes Hackett
