Seeking MPN/Essential Thrombosis Specialist & Holistic Health Recommendations in Portugal & Spain

Hi everyone,

I’m heading to Portugal and Spain for a few months, traveling solo. I’m a 62-year-old single female, and while I’m excited for the adventure, I also have some concerns about managing my essential thrombosis (MPN) while abroad.

I’d love any recommendations for specialists, holistic doctors, or healing centers in Portugal or Spain—especially in Lisbon, the Algarve, Seville, and the southern regions of Spain—who might have experience with MPN or thrombosis-related care. I’m also open to naturopaths or wellness centers that focus on integrative health and healing.

Additionally, if anyone has experience navigating the medical system in Portugal or Spain—whether for emergencies, prescriptions, or general care—I’d be grateful for any insights. I do experience panic attacks at times, and I sometimes worry about managing potential blood clot issues while on the road.

If you happen to be in any of these areas or have local contacts, I’d love to connect! It would be great to meet friendly faces along the way.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or support!

Annie

In the most southern part of Spain. Conil de la frontera is a very nice place, near to it. Just Google it and you will get a lot of information.

You may find a Functional Medicine doctor on this list ifm.org/find-a-practitioner

Unfortunately, the MPN Forum list of MPN docs is currently down. Not sure about MPN specialists.

At CUF Cascais, a private hospital, Dr Carlos Costa is a very good hematologist, not a specialist per se but is well informed and engaged. Studied in England so English is perfect. Cascais is 30 minutes from Lisbon on the coast, breathtaking. I was his patient for three years but am in England now There are not a large number of hematologists in Portugal generally and no "MPN experts" that I'm aware of. Private care is very reasonable cost wise. Also it is a good hospital for most disciplines. US prescriptions were honoured when I moved there, not certain now but probably. They are a people that want to help and keep you healthy. Meeting people in Cascais is very easy.

As a note, make certain you find "Carlos" - there are many Costas'. Also hydroxycarbomide can only be accessed at the hospital, not pharmacy.

Hello, Annie,

Living in Spain and looking for integrative doctors who know something about hematologist. Un- fortunately, there are no here at least I dont know any one to recommender. I wish. I visit " integrative" experts for specialization in a private way and the integration I do by my own. I visited doctors around of all Spain and I can say to you, nothing there is.

I dont know in Portugal but I think the level of hematology is low there. I have never had read any Portugues expert in MPN. Share your found experts, please. Very very interested.

Did you check your nerves system for panic attacks? I did.

Good luck!

well Annie my 2 cents is if you are concerned about your MPN while travelling for two months what you might be better looking for is a decent haematologist as opposed to a holistic doc, I say that as one who has seen dozens of holistic docs and the did nothing for my MPN, they did empty my wallet though. Holistic docs can have some value if you find a good one for your general health but not your MPN, everyone to their own of course,

All the hospitals in these areas are good however not sure if you have an insurance system to cover you for treatment if ill. If not worth doing. I have used a few on travelling especially Spain . Excellent Drs but you have to use their emergency entrance then they get you treated. Never had any problems although waiting time sometimes busy . 👍
