A question for those of you who see a Functional medical practitioner.
What do they help you with and what should I expect one to be able to help me with initially, and ongoing throughout my treatment. Do you get annual tests and what for. I have ET jak 2. Taking HU.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I consult with an Integrative/Functional Medicine doctor. She is a very valuable member of my care team who is well trained in Western medicine but also familiar with complementary health interventions. Importantly, she is aware of the interactions between supplements and medications. This doc has helps with a variety of issues, which include the following.
Systemic inflammation from the JAK2 mutation. Prescribed a combination of curcumin, L-glutathione, and a Pro-Resolving Mediator. Definitely helps with a variety of inflammatory issues
Nutritional deficiencies - Did a comprehensive nutritional assessment, Found deficiencies in magnesium, Vit D, Vit B/folate, and an elevation in mercury levels. Taking supplements for the deficiencies with doses titrated based on response. Identified and eliminated sources of mercury in diet.
Elevation in LFTs - Besremi adverse effect. Prescribed a daily dose of Milk Thistle Extract, which is used in Integrative Oncology as a liver protectant for cancer patients. It has worked well. My MPN Specialist was not familiar with this supplement but took note of the fact that it worked.
Depression in leukocytes as Besremi adverse effect - Prescribed a combination of Reishi and Astragalus to boost the immune system. While I cannot prove this works, I have not been more prone to infections despite mild lymphopenia and borderline neutropenia.
You would need to talk to the doc to see which tests/labs would be indicated in your case. I would be sure to ask about a complete nutritional panel as this is often ignored in more conventional medical practices. My doc use the NutrEval panel. gdx.net/products/nutreval
As well as advising on natural remedies to try and decrease negative effects of hydroxicarbamide, I find seeing someone who understands the link between emotional well being and physical a great support. Testing regularly vitamin /mineral levels is important as no use taking unnecessary supplements.
It's important to find someone who you have a good feeling about. May take seeing a few practitioners before you find one you are comfortable with
