Hydroxycarbamide (HU) passes into vaginal secretions and semen. This is why it is recommended that one use a condom when either partner is taking HU, Due to its toxicity, It is recommended that direct contact with the skin be avoided with HU. Direct contact of Hu with the skin can cause irritation and other possible adverse effects. This is also why caregivers are instructed to wear gloves when handling HU or the bottle that it is in.

OMG. I know that it’s toxic, but that it passes through the skin from person to person?!? 😱

I couldn’t believe that there was advice on this forum for those who can’t swallow the capsules that they should open them and put them in water and drink!!! This is probably also the cause of so many mouth ulcers when the patient cannot swallow the capsules quickly enough.

Not through the skin - but it is present in body fluids, so it is body fluids touching someone else's skin, or mixing with their body fluids, that is the concern.

Leveret20 is correct. HU passes into bodily fluids and does not pass through the skin. There is not a concern with saliva or sweat, but there can be with blood or semen/vaginal secretions. Genital tissues are sensitive and there is a risk of irritation with exposure to the HU that has passed onto bodily fluids.

This is a matter of informed consent. The risk is relatively low and many couples may choose to ignore it unless it becomes an issue. What matters is to be informed about the risk so each couple can make an informed decision.

The second of the articles Hunter quoted says “it is safe to hug and kiss …. Ask your caregiver about other sexual activity”. I did just that and was told that as I’m beyond childbirth age, the risk was minimal.

On a scale of 1 to 1000 for concern, I would give this a 2.

Just my 2 cents
