I've been trying to live healthier and lose weight, so I started looking into minimizing glucose spikes. I came across a suggestion to take one tablespoon of vinegar before the starchiest meal of the day. However, I read that citric acid prevents platelets from sticking together, which seems to be exactly what ET (essential thrombocythemia) does to our blood.
I am on Pegasy and worried it could have the opposite effect. I will check with my MPN specialist when I get the chance. In the meantime, does anyone else have insight they could share?

Gosh! I’ve just started adding it to my diet as it’s recommended for reducing cholesterol and general healthy lifestyle. If your advice is true I need to explore further. Thank you.
Just want to jump in and say I use apple cider vinegar (ACV) everyday on my salad. Never had a problem, and I'm pretty sure it made my kidney stones go away. After 30+ years of suffering from them, I am now stone free!
Just an fyi, do not drink vinegar straight as it will ruin the enamel on your teeth and burn your esophagus. I can't add any info. re: interaction with Peg, but ACV does seem to keep blood sugar in check. Good that you are checking with your dr.
I mix one tbsp with a glass of water and use a straw to minimise contact with the teeth, which I’d rather avoid because with the fancy-schmancy vinegar I got, it tastes better than any lemonade.
It also seems to have the multiple health benefits, I really hope to be able to continue.
Hi there im on peg and a type 1 diabetic for 41 years now and have been taking apple cider gummies for a month now. I take one in the morning and then one after dinner in the evening and had no problems but maybe check first. Hope all goes well for you
i have ET and have been taking ACV apple cider vinegar (the best vinegar for health) off and on for a few years. It’s excellent. It is acetic acid not citric acid. please be careful when studying, since many scientific terms are often similar! The more you learn the easier terminology will get. 🙂
I make green tea, add 1.5 tsp ACV, 1tbsp lemon juice, 1.5 Tbs pure cranberry juice and 1 tsp pure honey. Before my breakfast our breakfast is a stir fry of veggies in Olive oil, an egg or 1/2 avocado, some hemp or sunflower seeds, 1-2 rice waffles. Because we eat more fat and almost no carbs, we almost never get hungry. There are no sugar spikes at all. All our allergies, intolerances migraines, depression, and so much more are all gone.
ET does not prevent the platelets from sticking, it makes them stick together!
My body, food and home are chemical free, grain and milk free (some rice ok). We have the Autoimmune paleo diet and organic supplements that we need. We all feel really well, sleep better and have much more energy. So glad you’ve started taking care of your body in a natural way! I wish you all the best
Hi Anag, thank you. Being Mediterranean, that healthy diet comes rather naturally. The only real issue is eating seasonally here in England where everything gets imported throughout the year, but often not of the best quality.
BTW, I see you’re mentioning cranberry juice, that is something you should stay away from if you’re on blood thinners.
Regarding Interferon, as ACV diminishes platelets ‘ ability to stick together, what I’m worried about is how it would affect the effects of Pegasys.
Vinegar is commonly consumed (we use it in our salads, instead of dressing), I was hoping to find some research on this topic, but MPNs being rather niche, it did not yield any result so far.
I am also Mediterranean (Greek), but I live in Austria. We get a lot of veggies from Italy and Spain. I don't know if importing has gotten more difficult for you. I studied in London 89-91 then again a bit for work in 1998. As an opera student/singer, it was an absolute paradise!! Back then, I always had fresh veggies. I cook and store and also ferment some foods for winter: Sauerkraut, Pumpkin soup, etc, gulasch, pickles, marmalades and fruit cocktails all with less sugar. We eat lots of apples which are delicious as rings in the pan sauteed in olive oil with cinnamon! Oranges, etc.
I drink Cranberry juice to clean my urinary system and kidneys. Besremi was no good for my kidney. My pee stunk and my kidney levels were not good. As soon as I stopped and with support, they cleaned up.
I also eat 2 cloves of raw garlic daily followed by parsley to kill the smell! I usually take Ginkgo 120mg am and 120 pm. If I notice that my blood's too thin, I just skip 1/2 a day. I have carefully tested my body and depending on the thrombocyte levels.
My doctors have told me that foods don't affect the effect of interferon directly. It's not like other drugs. It trains the immune system to deal with the huge, mutated megakaryocytes which produce the thrombocytes. Unfortunately, it also does other things to the immune system. As long as I stuck to my diet, I was fine. Then on vacation there was almost no organic, wrong foods, ice cream, things that my immune system doesn't like, the problems started with the Besremi. I didn't connect that at first. As I noticed the problem, I was at the point that I had to stop the treatment. I am now strictly on the diet since mid August. my thyroid has continue to get better since on the diet which is six years now. that means that my Hashimoto is 60% better than before. Best Remi is known to cause hypothyroiditis but even though I had a terrible thyroid problem through all the other things that I was doing to help my health my thyroid continued to get better and better!
If all goes well, I might give Besremi another shot in March. Until then, I will have to deal with Anagelide. I have no other choice.
My health is a constant learning, trying and tweeking. : ) and I'm all in all feeling very good. I am blessed.
