I’ve had ET+Jak2 for 9 years and have tolerated Hydroxy plus asprin quite well. I’ve always had low blood pressure but was diagnosed with high blood pressure a month ago and put on meds which have worked in bringing it down. The problem is I feel really tired on them and my ankles have swollen, a common side effect of Amlodipine. I wonder if there might be a reaction with the Hydroxy, has anyone else experienced this and/ or has found a drug for high bp they have tolerated more please.

High Blood Pressure meds with ET+Jak2
Hi Linda. I'm not on Hydroxy, but am taking hypertensive meds. My GP had to work with me for quite a while to avoid unwanted side effects such as the ankle swelling (I tried Amlodipine and that could be partly why I came off it but it's a long time ago). For me a mix of Doxazosin and Indapamide have suited long term. (One of them gets a mildly surprised reaction from some Drs when I have to list my meds but I can't remember which).
Yes I had a similar problem- swollen right ankle and v odd sensation on sole of both feet. My haem said GP should change Amlopodine to another.Sallie
While hydroxyurea and Amlodipine do not show with any interactions, both can cause edema. It seems reasonable to think that taking both at the same time could increase the risk of this adverse effect. Best to consult with your care team and/or pharmacist about this issue.
There are at least 10 categories of BP meds, and many types/brands within those. I had to quit one bec of its drying effect.
So trials of the many options should bring up one that works out better. Your Dr should be able to suggest best alternate options to start.
Has there been any change in your blood counts since the high BP started?
Hi Linda. I have ET and am on Hydrox. Following diagnosis about four years ago I suddenly developed high blood pressure. I was given Amlodipine and had swollen ankles. My GP told me it was a common side effect of the blood pressure medication and changed me to Losartan which seems to work fine for me. Good luck.
Hi, another vote for Losartan. I know a lot of people started on Amlodopine for high bp (the cheapest drug) who have had to stop taking it. My husband took it for a year or so but had to stop as he found his ankles swelling more and more and eventually he also had really bad ankle rashes. Don’t think it’s necessarily a drug interaction at all.
He’s on Losartan now and has had no problems whatever.
Hi I'm et Jak 2 + had extremely high blood pressure... 283/186. I kid you not...I've been on most of them I think.... I've ended up on Ramipril and Doxazosin which is doing the trick ...
It's been a struggle for 2 years , as my doctor seemed to think it was OK for me to be walking around with a blood pressure of 165, because it had come down from the 200's....!!!! The hospital was fuming and sent him an email...they then asked me to go in and change my meds...
I'd also taken 20mg of Ramipril by mistake and it should have crashed, but instead it shot up, 10mg is the max of Ramipril, so that's why they added the Doxazosin and I'm feeling better....
Hope you get sorted out xx
I was the same on Amlopidine, they’re well known for causing swelling, whether you’re on hydroxy or not. I was changed to Indapamide (I think that’s the spelling) and been ok on that.
Hi Linda,
I was diagnosed with high BP and put on amlodipine 12 months before I was diagnosed. I’ve had mild ankle swelling ever since which I’ve accepted. But a holiday this summer saw that increase, accompanied by a rash so I’m about to discuss a change of meds.
Linda, also 1950!!!
Hello Linda, I have had ET
Sorry Linda, my reply went off before I could start! I have had ET JAK 2+ for 6 years and was put on Hydroxy straight away. I have high Blood Pressure for many years , long before ET struck. I tried many Blood Pressure medications which all had different side effects, one of which was I think A mlodopine and which gave me swollen ankles. After trying many different pills, I was finally given Verapamil together with Bendroflumethiazide which suits me alright and I’ve been taking them with Hydroxy all the time. Hope you find one which suits you. Best wishes .
Hi I also suffered swollen ankles with Amlodopine but after trying many types of anti hypertensive meds Felodopine seems best tolerated by me interestingly when I started clopidogrel as well my Bp has been the best it has been for many years which makes sense to me but has anyone else experienced this . L
Hi Linda,
I have PV, jak2+ and have been taking hydroxyurea for six years. A year ago I developed mild hypertension and my doctor prescribed lisinopril, minimal dose. It has completely relieved my bp problem and I've had no side effect. Good luck to you.
I am On ramapril for high BP & it was fine with hydroxy. I used to be in amlodopine & my ankles swelled too so I was put on Ramapril - ask your dr to change - all the best
Hi Linda1950,
Amlodipine in some patient may cause feet swelling.
Consult to your doc to reduce the dose or you could try Magnesium.
Hope this may help.
Cheers
