Different doctor …..

I had my monthly haematology appointment yesterday. My usual doctor was on holiday so I saw one of the others on team. He went through the blood results, stable, spoke about the nosebleed I had, was generally pleased with how I am.

Then he asked why I wasn’t interested in transplant with the team in Sheffield! My usual doctor told me this was a definite no because of my age - that was over a year ago! Told him that, he didn’t really comment, and I was so surprised about his words I couldn’t think of what to say!

Maybe I could have been on the road towards a transplant, or not, it would have been good to have a proper conversation with the transplant team whether I was suitable.

Anyway carrying on with Rux and EPO at the moment.

It can be easy to be so surprised about what somebody says that you don’t say anything. Has happened to me too. Worth following up though. Good luck

Yes. I am in the USA and have a neighbor who had one at age 78. He is doing well four years out. This is definitely something to discuss.

It is worth follow-up if you are still interested in pursuing SCT. Suggest reaching out the the transplant team directly to see whether they have an age cutoff that they use.

Please let us know what you learn and how you get on.

I had the same experience. Original haematologist said I was not suitable for stemcell. Saw one of Dr Harrison team recently and was asked if I was considering stemcell transplant?…

I was totally surprised by the question, but will also check this out at my next appointment.

I am nearly 70 and also have autoimmune. I have had a heart attack in 2019.

Hope you will get clear advice soon.

My usual haematologist said the cut off age was 70, however I think individual circumstances are considered.
