been on hydra for over 2 years no probs but developed small lump on side of nose had it removed this week now have to wait 6 weeks approx for results. My hemo consultant said it was a side effect of meds but may have to change but you still get different side effects with the other meds so don’t really know what to think consultant who took lump out thinks it could be a basal cell carcinoma but not sure any one else had this

yes I too has basal cell carcinoma on side of nose. Safely removed and no other problems yet! But I have heard of one lady who has had six removed!! I was on Hydroxyurea for about nine years and Ruxilitinib for past seven or eight years…. Good luck Bruddery
Thank you for that how do you get on with ruxilitinib I haven't had any problems with the hydroxyurea
Carcinomas are a known risk with hydroxyurea. You will hear from others on the forum who have also had this adverse effect. Some people are not able to tolerate this or other of the medications used to treat MPNs. In my case, I was also intolerant of and refractory to hydroxyurea. Fortunately, I responded much better to the interferons (Pegasys/Besremi).
We are all different in how we respond to the medications used to treat MPNs. Some respond well to one, but not to another. We each need an individualized care plan guided by a MPN Specialist to ensure optimal care. Please know that there are other treatment options that you may respond better to.
All the best.
Yes, I have been on hydroxy. for 8 years and have developed a basal cell carcinoma on my nose -just waiting for removal.
that is crazy you have to wait 6 weeks, but maybe pathology is backed up where you are at. It if it a basal cell carcinoma or a non aggressive squamous cell I wouldn’t think you wouldnt have to change your medication right now, but if you continue to make them you may. HU can put you at higher risk for skin cancer, especially the longer you have been on it. I think it will just need to be a discussion for you and your doctor and your dermatologist. There are lots of meds out there that increase your risk for skin cancer and HU is one of them. The good thing is that now we are getting more options to treat MPNs, so that maybe why your doctor just wants to change you. And people are doing very well on other medications. And like the other say these can be safely removed. We do MOHs surgery at my office and patients are not even put under general anesthesia so it is super safe. They will take good care of you. Good luck!
I see a dermatologist twice a year, and she has done some small interventions so far
while I was on hydroxy I was incredibly sun sensitive and ended up with a 3 inch scar on the side of my face from a basal cell carcinoma. I had to have the wonderful Mohs surgery. Of course one solution since you are doing well on the hydroxy would just be to sunscreen extremely well even on cloudy days and that should be able to keep you free from skin cancer. Wishing you the very best in whatever you decide.
after reading the reply’s there seems to be side effects with other medications too so will wait for results and then speak to my consultant thank you
