Hi, a few months ago I posted re a still painful coccyx after breaking it in April. I asked general opinion about if it could be slow to heal because I take Hydroxy and the general answer was “yes”. And discussion also about whether healing could be slow because of having an MPN (ET), and again answer was “yes probably”. Since then I have met with my consultant Prof Harrison who said a very clear “no” to both questions!
So, the lesson I will learn from that is that whilst it’s always very helpful to have discussions on this forum, and equally as important (certainly for me) to find support, I feel that it is worth remembering that the real answers to our queries lie with our haematology experts!
Happy 2024 to you all, I hope it is happy, healthy and full of adventure, however big or small they may be. X

I re read answers you had and looked to me that people were generally giving their personal experience . Hunters response was good .Healing is a very individual thing .
We always need to get advice from professionals we trust and assess for ourselves .
I totally agree that we should always look to the healthcare experts for answers to any medical questions. We can speculate, advise and support, but never diagnose!
After reading the response to the original post though I really can’t see any evidence that the general consensus was ‘yes’ to your question regarding hydrea and slow healing.
Thanks for your reply. Now that I have spoken to MPN specialist and reread my previous post I agree with you. I think I must have originally read the (helpful & very supportive) answers in a different way which is odd…perhaps I wanted MPN/Hydroxy to be a reason for slow healing (rather than age or my own slow body?!) and so that’s what I saw. My above post was not in anyway meant to sound accusatory and I apologise if it it. X
No need for apologies, your post did not come across as accusatory in any way.
There was one maybe two answers out of many that may have alluded to a link, maybe these were the ones that had an impact on you?
I actually thank you for your ‘Thought for 2024’. This forum is friendly, supportive, and there are very knowledgeable members who I have learned valuable information from. However, I do think we need to be reminded at times that the ‘Experts’ are the ones that we should be discussing any important medical issues with. I think I have said as much in the past!
I am also with Professor Harrison, who I regard highly. We are both lucky in that respect!
sadly a haematologist/MPN specialist is not a specialist in orthopaedic matters. It’s quite possible she has never even done an orthopaedic rotation, as it’s just not possible to cover every area in their training. They will also only know a bit about condition's outside their expertise if it has been raised and come to their personal attention and have then looked into it, or through their own personal experience, which clearly is unique to everyone anyway. No two breaks are the same and the length of time it takes to heal is also different. Generalisations are not reality .
It would have been more honest for her to say it’s unlikely, or she doesn’t think so, rather than a definite ‘no’.
Unexpected things happen in medicine all the time. That’s how they keep learning new stuff, which is a good thing.
Hope you are feeling better though. My fractured coccyx took a really long time to heal, pre-ET. 😉
Doctors, even specialists or sub-specialists are not always right either. I have learned not to have blind faith in them either because they sometimes provide misinformation too. I just saw 3 spine specialists and got differing opinions. Sometimes it is a good idea to also research the situation yourself so you have a fair bit of knowledge so when you get an answer to your question from the doctor you know if it sounds reasonable. By getting responses to your questions here, you are learning about other peoples experiences & research including what their own physician may have told them.
