I have ET and experiencing very blotchy itchy soles and sides on feet . Anyone else have this ? Gets very red and itchy and then skin peeling off . Will have to get appointment with GP . Wondering g if it’s from the ET or hydroxy side effect.

Hello HazeBlue! A friend, who isn’t afflicted by MPN , has had an itchy big toe, red, sore and skin peeling for some months. The dermatologist told her the condition is caused by a fungus and prescribed some medicated cream. It’s improving very slowly.

Hi Hazel.

I’ve had this and went to GP - turned out to be fungal infection and cleared up with a prescribed cream.

Definitely see a GP ASAP. While this sounds like a skin infection you are correct that hydroxyurea can cause rashes and other skin problems.

It is worth noting this warning. "What are some side effects that I need to call my doctor about right away? Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat." mskcc.org/cancer-care/patie....

I suspect that as the others suggested this is most likely a skin infection. I have also had similar fungal infections on my feet. They are readily diagnosed and treated. What you should not do is make any assumptions, however. This merits attention as an emergent issue. Suggest that you call both your GP and your MPN care team to let them know about this issue. It would be best to be seen urgently to rule out the potential adverse effect, even though this is most likely an easily treated skin infection.

Note that most GPs would not be familiar with MPNs and the adverse effects from their treatment. I would be clear with the GP about the need to rule out an adverse effect and not make assumptions.

Please do let us know how you get on.

saw GP today . She doesn’t know much about Hydroxycarbamide or ET PV she did say to try cream she prescribed . Could be infection or fungal or inflammatory problem . If no better to go back in a week . Have heamatologist review next week . That’s if the blood sample labels arrive in time to get bloods done . Will ask about alternative drugs but they all carry risks . Thanks fir your reply . Seems this flared up if weather warm or increase in meds . Have ET but lately Reds too high too and have venesections. I really do t fair well with venesections . Bp hits the floor and I feel faint and can’t see .

Hi, I am just replying to your problems after venesections. When I developed that reaction I was given intravenous saline solution into other arm to replenish fluids and balance the blood. T the same time. It's standard treatment but not always known. I had it written into my care protocols when travelling and then it could be done routinely. Also check how much blood they plan to take. Even though it's a nuisance ie you may need another sooner, it's better not to have a full unit taken if you react like this.

I got horrendous, painful foot ulcers when I was on hydroxy. Started with itchy blotchy skin on my toes. They didn’t heal until I came off hydroxy. So please take care in case that happens.

morning I have had exactly the same foot issues which I can date back to when platelets started rising so think it is more the condition than medication.

My toe nails also changed and finger nails but toe nails worse discoloured and soft so very difficult to cut .. so glad you have asked this question .. I used to think of it like chilblain type discomfort but not sure that means much to many people . L
