Hello MPN Voice.

Last week I contracted cellulitis (don’t know how) and, to cut a long story short, I was placed on an antibiotic (Flucloxacillan) drip. No overnight stay in hospital. Then discharged home with armfuls of antibiotics (Flucloxacillin) to take 2 four times daily. Just wondering if this will appreciably impact on ET treatment. I expect I ought to mention this to haematologist at next consultation. All views appreciated.

It is possible that an infection could trigger some reactive thrombocytosis. You may see a temporary bump up in your PLTs. This would be temporary and usually nothing to worry about.

Suggest not waiting to contact your hematologist just in case the MPN and treatment for it do bear on the cellulitis in some way. They should have already checked your leukocyte levels (e.g., neutrophils), which may be to some degree suppressed by cytoreductive treatment. Advisable to be sure about that.

Hope the cellulitis clears quickly.

Hello Hunter and Gilded,

Now I am suffering erysipelas. Currently undergoing antibiotic treatment. Penicillin Amoxicillin. But in China, antibiotics are subject to abuse, and many people are easily given antibiotics when they have a fever during their childhood, with the aim of recovering faster. Therefore, intravenous injection of antibiotics is common in China, and this does not necessarily mean that the condition is severe.

I have been intravenous injection of antibiotics 2 weeks, normally in China, erysipelas need intravenous injection of antibiotics 2 weeks. but it may be due to taking hormones that my immune system is low, causing me to still have a slight itching on one foot, especially when my hands touch it, there is also a slight swelling. Chinese doctor suggest me to inject more than 2-3 days than normal people because I'm a hematology patients.

This is my experiences.😢😭

Sorry to hear about the erysipelas. Most unpleasant. I hope the treatment works ASAP.

I am not sure why you would need a higher dose unless you actually are immune compromised. You should be able to tell about that by looking t your history of complete blood counts.

Antibiotics are overused in the USA too. This is often driven by patient's expectations that the doctor give them something when they are sick. Unfortunately, antibiotics are not the right solution for every illness. The overuse is causing problems, including treatment resistance strains of bacteria.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I was diagnosed with cellulitis, had antibiotics, it didn’t clear, tried and failed to get to see a doctor again about it for a couple of months, as I’d already seen a doctor about it, eventually got an appointment to be told it was veinous eczema which I was given steroid cream for.

Thank you Lizzie. That’s interesting. Are you with the NHS? I have a follow up appointment with hospital on Sunday ( one week after its diagnosis and drip).

I have venous excema and have to wear pressure socks. After some months the colour faded but I still wear the socks to stop it returning although they are ugly and restrict the clothes you can wear.
