Hi, does anyone use inteferon and turmeric? Is it good or is it counterproductive? Thanks
I do take Besremi and turmeric. It is a very helpful combination for me. The Besremi is doing an excellent job controlling the blood cell numbers and i have reduce my allel burden from 38% to 9%. The turmeric/curcumn does an excellent job conrolling osteoarthritis pain and inflammation.
Do be sure to let your care team know if you decide to take turmeric.
Wishing you all the best.
Can turmeric/curcumn affect blood? Will it reduce blood red or platelet count?
Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory agent. It would typically not reduce platelet/RBC count by much, if any. It does have some mild blood thinning effect like aspirin, but not enough so that I have ever noticed it.
Hunter you are wonderful at giving good advice, I suffer from aching joints, ET Jak 2 positive, take 500mg hydroxycarmide and 75mg clopidogrel every day, would love to try cucumin , but health shop says it interferes with blood thinners, so now confused. Any advice gratefully received. Jan
The technically correct term is that turmeric/curcumin can potentiate the effects of blood thinners, increasing risk of hemorrhage.
Anticoagulants / Antiplatelets: Preclinical studies (54) (55) and a case report (66) suggest that turmeric can increase risk of bleeding. mskcc.org/cancer-care/integ...
Note that the interaction specifically between turmeric/curcumin and clopidogrel does not consistently flag as a concern. This source shows "No Interactions: Found". reference.medscape.com/drug...
My own experience is with combining various anti-inflammatory agents with aspirin, under medical supervision. My docs have prescribed high dose ibuprofen, meloxicam and curcumin. Of all of these, curcumn was the most effective anti-inflammatory agent with the lowest level of risks/side effects when combined with aspirin.
I am in no way qualified to give advice on whether you should consider using curcumin along with clopidogrel. I would suggest that you do your own risk/benefit analysis as to whether the benefits of reducing inflammation with curcumin outweigh the risks in your case. I would also suggest reviewing your case with a medical professional who is familiar with the use of supplements alongside medications. This is not all doctors as not all are familiar with supplement use and are understandably reluctant to recommend something they do not know about. This is why I consult with an Integrative/Functional Medicine doc. You may also find pharmacists who are familiar with supplement-medication interactions.
The bottom line is that anything that is biologically active enough to help you can also hurt you and interact with things. We have to weigh the risk and benefits of anything we take. The decision is made based on your goals, risk tolerance, and treatment preferences.
All the best moving forward.
I am on Peg and started tumeric/curcumin about 2 months ago, in consultation with my MPN specialist. He said it had been shown in some patients to help with inflammation...not sure yet if it has helped to be honest but will continue to take it.
Yes I take both. Turmeric great for joint pain.
Hi
