There can be multiple reasons for a gum bleed. gum bleeds can be a MPN symptom or an unrelated dental issue. Aspirin or other blood thinners can contribute as well.

Best to let your care team know and get it checked out if it persists.

I am a dentist who was diagnosed with PV in September and I can certainly agree with Hunter’s reply. I too had some gum bleeding which I put down to my MPN but I would certainly recommend you see your dentist to double check that you have no dental/oral hygiene issues. My gum bleeding settled once I started venesections and then interferon. I hope yours settles quickly.

thank you I thought it was the blood thinners

It could certainly be the blood thinners. Just get your teeth checked to eliminate a dental issue and do your best to keep your oral hygiene as thorough as possible. Good luck

I often have gum bleeds, when I had a deep clean at the dentist it took a long time for it to stop, I left the building looking like a greedy vampire! Have your teeth/gums checked for plaque as that can make it worse. My haematologist said it was a side effect of the disease and medication. I was given a mouth wash by Haematology, you can get ulcers as well. Oh life as an mpn’er can be fun!

I found that the aspirin caused my gums to bleed. My haematologist reduced the dose to every other day (I’ve had no clotting issues though), and my dentist prescribed a toothpaste, which has helped.

It's happened to me on/off for 5 years. That's when I started HU plus at the same time I started blood thinners & low dose aspirin for stents so gum bleeding was the first side effect I had. I use a toothpaste called Parodontax for gum bleeding but it's still annoying.

Agree with all the previous responses - best to get it checked out by your MPN specialist and your dentist. It was my bleeding at the gums which foretold the jump in my platelets (from about 900 to 1,400 - as platelets increase the risk shifts somewhat from clotting to hemorrhaging - my gums (which had never bled previously) started bleeding and I just happened to have a full blood work up do - which revealed the unexpected jump i my platelets and led me down the cyto-reductive route...definitely not saying that is what is happening with you but it is a good idea to get i checked. Good luck.
