high platelet count: my platelet count is 451. Is... - MPN Voice
high platelet count
my platelet count was 436 last week and heamatologist said it was ok and stable
I was put on hydroxycarbamide in august with blood thinners if it helps
I would think they might monitor bloods to see if platelets creep up. Have you been tested before? And what are other bloods like ?
Also have you any symptoms of concern ?
i get tested every year. It has slowly been creeping up. All the other blood work was good.
No worrying symptoms ? I would discuss with your consultant and then consider risks of doing nothing yet if you feel unsure of their recommendation.
Follow anti inflammatory diet and keep an eye on stress levels..
Don't forget it's not the medics who decide . It's you. With their support .
not really. Sometimes my face feels flush and headache
I too had those symptoms, my platelets were hovering around 550 and creeping up, but did have symptoms so eventually after getting an appointment was started on hydroxy and aspirin. I had a lot of flushing, and still do get it sometimes, stress is a big factor in that too. I had headaches, tingling and prickly sensations all over the body. I still get periods where they erupt and die down again. My target is for them to be under 400 (which is what the haemo dept have set) and at present they are 367 and tend to fluctuate a bit each test, but they are happy provided they are within this perimiter. Also had a bone marrow biopsy and am ET Jak2.
Hopefully the doctors will talk about risks ,of doing nothing except watch and see approach and discuss questions you have.If you feel you arnt being listened to and respected you can change Dr.
Have you an MPn specialist ?
You will see different references ranges at different labs. the high end of the "normal" range can vary based on where you have the CBC done.
Diagnostically, thrombocytosis = PLT > 450. There are some things to know about platelet levels. It is normal for platelet levels to vary by as much as 100K, sometimes in a single day. Platelet levels vary based on what is going on in your body. A bleeding event, infection, injury, inflammation can all cause an increase in platelet levels. There is no linear relationship between an increase in platelet levels and risk of thrombosis. There is an increase in risk of hemorrhage when you platelet levels get very high.
Typically, PLT = 451 would not be any cause for concern; however, if you have had a prior incident of thrombosis then your care team would want to monitor more closely. Note that it is the trend over time that matters, not any single lab read. If there is a concern about developing a MPN, your care team can refer you for assessment by a MPN Specialist.
Hope that answers your question.
My platelets were over 800. I take hydroxy carbomide (9 x 500 mg a week and one 75mg aspirin a day. Down to 551 a few months ago. Waiting for latest test reults. Hemo wants levels to go down to 450 so your level does not seem too worrying, but should be watched. Ask about taking aspirin .
not high but depends on age. If over 60 they will do monthly bloods to monitor if rising. Usually Haemotology then advise . 👍
That's not particularly high. Just a tad over the maximum "safe" level which ranges from 400,000 to 450,000 depending on health jurisdiction. In Australia it's 400,000 but I think the WHO has it at 450,000.
You probably just need monitoring for now but if there's an upward trajectory then you may need daily baby aspirin or cytoreductive therapy depending on what other risk factors you might have.
have you been diagnosed?
Mine started at over 1000, so I was put on chemo medication now its 350 so it's reducing mine x
Hi Twinnotes,,
Do not too worry about your PLT. It is very safe.
Some of us has reached to 1.500.

451 is not that high since normal range is 150-400.
