Sudden Anaemia !

Hello

I have E T and my platelets are down to 250, but my Haemo consultantant is concerned that I am quite anaemic and wonders why this is ?

I had Bowel Cancer surgery 2015 and was given all clear in 2020.

My Haemo consultant contacted colo-rectal consultant who has in turn phoned me and said -He thinks I should have a endoscopy(last one 4 yrs ago)!

I am worried that I may be bleeding from ??? Have yet to get a date for endoscopy!

I know what to expect for the test and it isn't pleasant! Feeling extremely anxious- I am 77 yrs old female. Would welcome comments from others ...

Isn't your doctor concerned about MF progression? Also how sudden this anemia was??

I agree with an Analive9. Before going through with the endoscopy, I would check with your hematologist and see if you progressed to MF. I became anemic after about eight years after I was diagnosed with ET. A couple years later I changed doctors and found out that I had MF. Once you rule that out, then you could have your endoscopy.

what is the reason that your doc concerned about anaemic? Is it only due to your low platelets? If are taking HU or Pegasus, your platelet number is supposed to drop, isn't it?

I had a colonoscopy last year. Mine came out ok but I've been told that if one is high risk, the procedure is recommended every three years. (as you say not a fun day) Has your Dr discussed this schedule before?

But with MPN as others say here, it's also a good idea to look deeper at your changes in any case.

Hi EPguy,

I am interested in your comment about every three years having a colonoscopy. Is it because of previous cancer treatment or is because we are immune compromised with blood cancer?

Thanks, Eileen

My Dr, said if they had found a positive result ( a possibly risky polyp etc) that makes for high risk pts and it's one per three years. A friend of mine gets that. He also high risk from family history which is part of it too.

My MPN did not come up in the risk level.

Hi. Do you have an MPN specialist overseeing your MPN? If not it’s essential that you have one who at least is consulting. All of us have found a huge improvement in our care once we’re seeing a specialist. If you don’t have one, are there any located close enough you could see one? A hematologist isn’t at all the same as an MPN specialist. Katie

My Consultant Haematologist has lowered my Anagrelide to one per day - (is good)He knows about every blood cancer etc etc- has been at our hospital for about 30 plus years!

His specialities are blood no other illnesses.Trained at Kings College-London.

I have family history of B Cancer and was due to have endoscopy next year but date has been brought forward just as a precautionary measure-.I only get phone calls with results from him- (due to Covid infection at hospital)! They play safe.

Thanks for all your advice.

Hi, sorry that you're feeling worried; it's only natural when there are any as yet unexplained changes to your health. As has been suggested re possible transition to MF it might be a good idea to have a bone marrow aspiration/trephine. Good luck.
