I have been made aware that HU can possibly lead to skin cancer and I know it’s best to keep out of the sun. Does anybody know the precise reason why this medication causes this particular link to the skin?

Hydroxycarbamide, PV and skin cancer
I'm sure on this forum somewhere there was a post saying that HU isn't linked to skin cancer....have a search
As far as I know it makes the skin thiner
Hydroxy taken over a considerable time will thin the skin, which allows the UV rays to penetrate the skin quicker. My consultant told me a few years ago when I was going on holiday to stay out of the sun as much as possible, or the very least, keep in the shade, cover up and use a lot of sunscreen. Not what you want to hear when you're going on holiday, but I've stuck to that advice ..... including a huge hat!!
Hi Barb17, you should have an information leaflet with your tablets which will detail this information that: skin cancer has been reported in patients receiving long term Hydroxycarbamide, and that you should protect your skin from the sun and regularly inspect your skin during your treatment.
See also the information on our website mpnvoice.org.uk/about-mpns/...
Changes to the skin Hydroxycarbamide can cause changes to the skin, such as skin darkening. It may increase the risk of skin cancer, so please take extra care in the sunshine. It can cause mouth and leg ulcers especially with long-term use.
