Aspirin can cause nausea and other GI issues. I have never heard of it causing dehydration though. Like all of the meds used to treat MPNs (or anything else) there can can be adverse effects. Not sure what else you take, but aspirin can interact with other meds as well. I experienced excessive hemorrhage on 81mg of aspirin so I take a 40.5mg dose. It works well for me.

Are you taking enteric coated (gastro resistant) aspirin? I find the regular aspirin you get on a standard NHS prescription upsets my stomach. There are other options aside from aspirin and you should talk to your haem. It’s best not to just stop any prescribed meds. Aspirin (or alternative) is an important first line of treatment.

I’d be surprised it’s the aspirin that is making you dehydrated - unless you are vomiting or having ongoing diarrhoea. It’s really (really) important to drink plenty of fluids - preferably water - if you have an MPN. Keeping well hydrated is critical not just in terms of your blood health but also in keeping headaches and fatigue at bay and feeling generally alert and well (or relatively so!). Wishing you well.

When I first went on aspirin, 13 years ago, I had upset stomach. GP put me on enteric coated aspirin. I'm also on Lansaprozole, which I've Ben on before aspirin- previous gastric ulcer.

I've had ET for years and take 75mg of Aspirin daily. I must say I've not had those symptoms. I maybe understand the nausea because of the effect on the stomach, but I've never heard of becoming dehydrated. Do you take enteric coated? That helps protect the stomach lining. Also, take your Aspirin with plenty of liquid. I'd definitely mention this to your haematologist though. Good luck!

Can't use aspirin due to ulcerative colitis (in remission). I've been on hydroxyurea for 10 years. Only side effect I notice is a sore tongue (very rarely), and some thinning of my hair. Love your name Catlips (hope you are a cat lover like I am, purring makes the day go better every day).

How high are your platelets? I take 81mg once a day. I get dehydrated too but I don’t think it’s from the aspirin. I do make sure to drink water throughout the day.

I always eat something when I take my 81 mg of aspirin. My blood count results from my last CBC are WBCs 25.5RBCs 5.15; Platelets 975. I have been on hydrea for 4 months. Over the past few weeks symptoms were again increasing so the dosage was increased from 500 mg daily to 500 mg alternating with 1000 mg daily. That change was made 4 days ago. I’m taking the coated aspirin to prevent blood clots because of the high platelets. Incidentally, I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma 16 months before being diagnosed with MPN. I am also being treated for MM and have been on aspirin as part of that treatment. I have found that eating something when I take the aspirin avoids any GI irritation. In fact, I eat something whenever I take medication unless otherwise contraindicated. I have also had phlebotomy 3 times because of high hematocrit. I do drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Good luck to you in your journey.
