A strange question to ask. I'm wondering whether anyone here has successfully given a DNA Saliva test for Family History research and is currently taking Hydroxycarbamide?
I've been an avid genealogist and family history researcher since 2006 - It's my main hobby and I love it.
To take my research further, I submitted my DNA to Ancestry in May 2021, that test failed - I submitted a second test in July, which again failed, and I'm now waiting to hear the results of my third test - they are currently in the process of extracting my DNA. Thankfully, Ancestry send a free DNA test kit after the failures.
I've followed each saliva test to the letter! So, the only thing I can think of as to why they are failing is Hydroxycarbamide, as I produce enough saliva to fill the tube.
I'm hoping that this latest test will be successful, I just would like to know if it fails again, whether I should just give up and pass the next 'free kit' over to one of my siblings, or whether I should keep trying?
I know enough to know that DNA from our parents/grandparents won't be the same, as we individually all get a different percentage. My siblings will be a close match, but won't be my DNA.

Good Day, I submitted mine to 23 & ME 7 years ago while taking Hydrea and had no problem with getting my results. Maybe try a different DNA company? Best of luck!
Hi Judy, Thank you - I'm very well at the moment. For the first time since PV diagnosis in 2015, my bloods have been so good and stable of late that I've now been changed to 6 monthly appointments! No blood tests for 6 months is amazing.
That’s really good Kari, I’m pleased for you. All is good with me, my bloods are quite staple at the moment, still on 3 monthly tests due to taking Methotrexate as well as Hydroxicarbamide. I have my flu jab on Sunday. Xx
Hi Judy - that's also good to hear. I'm getting my Flu jab at the beginning of Oct, they originally had me booked in on the 25th, but I'm away in Cornwall that weekend with my family. x
I don't take that medication but its good you are doing the ancestry test because other companies will accept ancestry's kit . Its best to load the kit onto Gedmatch, which is a chromosome browser ( free) so you can work out which chromosomes each match are on...if your DNA match is also on there. Ancestry refuses to give researchers a chromosome browser. You do pay a small fee to access a CB on some other sites, but you get a bunch of other DNA matches to work with as well and it is so helpful knowing which chromosome a bunch of matches are on. The sites aren't perfect and ancestry has scrubbed all DNA matches under 7cM so you can't get all the way back. 'My Heritage' has a CB and heaps of matches but miss a lot as well. Good luck with your test this time.
Thanks papakura55 I've already signed up for Gedmatch. I can't wait to be able to use it. I received notification yesterday that they have begun genotyping my DNA - so fingers crossed.
Very exciting! Gedmatch is a bit tricky to get your head around and you will need some of your Ancestry DNA matches to go on there as well, even though you will find heaps of matches on Gedmatch...I think you need to pay a small fee to see the matches in groups. I haven't done this yet.
