I'm at week 4 of my hydrea treatment and just this week developed a dreadful nausea. I have meds (apo-metoclorpramide 10mg) but they seem to make it worse. My haemo thinks I picked up a virus? I will be receiving a different script for the nausea. Currently on 1000mg Hydrea 4 times a week and 500mg for the other 3.
Does anyone else have really bad nausea (no vomiting)?
Nausea is a common side effect with HU. It can also cause other GI issues, including diarrhea and constipation. If it does not subside, then it may be that you cannot tolerate HU. While many people can tolerate it, not all of us can. I fall into that latter category myself. The adverse effects may subside if you reduce the dose and will usually resolve if you discontinue the HU. The good news is that there are other options if you cannot tolerate the HU.
Thanks Hunter. It's still early days . Nausea started in earnest at the beginning of week 3. I'm hoping it will pass soon. I will be taking the hydrea before bedtime now, as someone here mentioned that. Also will start ginger tea. as I just can't drink coffee at the moment.
Hi, I felt very sick when I first started on the Hydrea. I also had to take allopurinol for gout for six weeks, and they had a lot of side effects and also made me feel sick. Once I'd finished the gout tablets, I still felt a bit nauseous but it eased off over couple of months, as my body adjusted to the Hydrea. Now I'm ok most of the time, but sometimes need an anti sickness pill at weekends when I take a higher dose.
Hi June, I also got nauseated and suddenly had legs that felt like lead, at about week 4, but not from the start. This I took to mean it was having some effect on my gut and body that was cumulative and not just something that I might get used to. I put up with that and a few other things, sore on the tip of my tongue, a suspicious red spot on my ankle bone and thought I might have to take up sleeping outside the bathroom door, for 5 days before I just quit and told my new MPN specialist I was done with HU (500mg daily)
And the nausea and leaden legs were better the next day. Tongue has healed though I am still on the run at times, if you get my drift.
Four weeks later my first shot of Pegasys and now on day 4 and feeling almost normal (really need my coffee in the morning). Now if my guts would just get back to normal...
I hope that your nausea either goes away or you find another solution soon, we are in this for a long time and no one can afford to feel that way all or even some of the time, if it can be avoided.
Hi I am new to the site and still working on a diagnosis which looks like PV.
I have dealt with a different illness that caused terrible nausea. Something that worked for me were "Sea Bands". They are worn 4 in down from the wrist and use a pressure point. I am in the US and get them on Amazon or local pharmacy. You may want to see if they are available. Hope you feel better soon
