How do I look after my emotional well-being during this stressful time?

Feeling concerned or overwhelmed by the news of Coronavirus is understandable, whether you are thinking about your own health and the possible impact, or for someone close to you. If you are feeling this way, remind yourself that there are practical things you can do:

-TRUST: You know your MPN well, use all your usual techniques and strategies to stay well.

-ACKNOWLEDGE: Notice and acknowledge the uncertainty, thoughts and worry as they come to mind.

-PAUSE & PULL BACK: Rather than respond to these try to pause and breathe. Remember, this may be the worry talking, thoughts are not statements or facts. These thoughts and feelings will pass.

-INFORM: Limit excessive exposure to the news/social media, if getting information, use up-to-date and reliable sources, e.g. NHS website. nhs.uk/conditions/coronavir...

-CONNECT: Talk to someone about how you’re feeling. Reach out for support from others by phone, text or video.

-CALM: Stick to your normal routine as much as you are able to. Add in things that help you feel calm, e.g. breathing, calming music/sounds/tv.

-STAY PRESENT: Explore the present moment, because right now, in this moment, all is well. Notice your breathing. Notice the ground beneath you. Look around and notice what you see, what you hear, what you can touch, what you can smell. Right now. Then shift your focus of attention to something else - on what you need to do, on what you were doing before you noticed the worry, or do something else - mindfully with your full attention.

Thank you so much Maz,,the worry is the same for you but you still calm us all.Keep well you and your family.We are lock down here in Fr ,we need attestation forms to go out at all,even for Medication!!Very frightening!

Fortunately our house and land is rural,so easy to walk and get fresh air.

Merci Sally, it must be very scary for you all, but nice that you live in a rural area, like me, in a small village so easy to get out and about with our dog and we are all keeping our distance. Take care Maz x

Yes Maz,our dogs and horses for us as well do help to keep us focused on positivity,We used to live in Devon,our farm was isolated...think on the whole the Devon villages and rural areas should be safe,let's hope not panic.Portez vous Bien!xx

Everyone with an MPN should follow this advice.

An awful lot of information is bombarding us would suggest everyone reads the publication highlighted by your good self.

Keep safe and more importantly keep well.

Remember you know your body and the condition better than anyone else.

Hi Maz , thank you again. I was in the garden yesterday, putting plants in colourful pots along my fence. It was great to get out in peace, away from news reports and now got a nice, colourful fence!

Was doing all those things Maz and feeling fairly serene until this morning when I discovered my next door neighbour has just got back from a week in France and spent two days in centre Parcs!!!! The ultimate of selfishness or what!

Hi Maz .Thsnks for that .Ive put the advice from MPN up on my face book page as I think it's good general advice . My cousin asked if she can include on her newsletter -she works in a chiropractic office . Hope that would be ok ? Especially giving the credit to MPN voices who most people haven't heard of of? Hope that's okay?

Thank you Maz and all the MPN voice team, you are all doing an amazing job.

I have had issues with an anxiety disorder since the unexpected death of my brother several years back. Surprisingly these events are causing me little more then my normal anxiety levels. Perhaps it’s because it’s an issue l face daily and l have become more equipped to live with it

I find mindfulness useful lots on the net about breathing - l used to get dizzy/lightheaded alot before l started doing breathing excercises. When stressed we don’t breath properly. Many simple exercises are available.

Also try not to catastrophize - to imagine the absolute worse. When l do l try to stop myself doing this. Naturally do all you can to protect and inform yourself follow the great guidance given on here and NHS etc

I think having a routine helps even if you have to construct a new one. Focus on positives ie developments in China progress on treatments

Also set up support with groups of friends on watsap you can collectively Chat joke distract whatever, helps passes time and your getting support and it prevents isolation These are what helps me!

Stress causes our bodies to lose magnesium, a mineral critical for so many body processes and even the air we breathe. I encourage visiting two non commercial web sites, “Krispin magnesium” and mgwater for a more in-depth understanding of this miracle mineral. Also be aware of boron’s ability to increase magnesium absorption. Just search on nothing boring about boron. One other interesting feature of magnesium is of preventing platelets from sticking together and clot prevention. That is another search worth doing.
