Swollen ankles

Hi anyone else suffer with swollen ankles? I have the thinnest socks on and still get marks as if there digging in. I’ve been ET Jack 2 Pos for 3 years now. Take aspirin and Hydroxy. Or is it an age thing, coming up to 55. Not been on here for a few months, need to get back to reading it daily as so helpful in many ways 😀

Are you on any blood pressure tablets? The wrong ones will cause your problem.

Hello I used to have swollen ankles and I was on blood pressure tablets. I now don’t take the blood pressure tablets and my ankles and legs legs are now ok. I have PV Jaks 2 pos diagnosed 4 years ago. All I take now is Hydroxycarbamide and aspirin. Hope this helps.

Hi, there. I had ET Jak2, now MF. I get swollen ankles once in a while. Try hydrating more and eating less salt.

My husband does have swollen ankles at least once a fortnight. According to Dr, it is a "gout-like" reaction to CLL. He's on W&W, the only medicine he takes is allopurinol.

Hi grumpyfairy!

I hear you. I’m almost 55 and had swollen ankles (bad circulation, deep vein insufficiency). Get to a vein doctor and let him/her check your legs with ultra sound. My problem increases my chance of thrombosis many times. I’ve been wearing support sock for 2.5 years and feel So strong again. Swollen ankles/ legs take a lot of energy out of you. So important! I even wear them in Green in the summer when it’s 40 degrees. On the beach, I take them off when lying down or going swimming.

Good luck with the testing.

Hi Anag, I'm really interested to hear this experience. I've just been discharged from hospital, having IV antibiotics for recurrent cellulitis with quite bad swelling, but also a possible heart issue, as I have previously had heart failure. They did a scan for DVT - thankfully clear. They think I have, but have not actually diagnosed, venous insufficiency and I have to get a GP's prescription for compression socks. Are you able to live normally with them? Can you wear other socks over the top (e.g. walking socks)? Can you exercise normally? Also, do you known if there is any connection to MPNs? Sorry to ask so many questions! Thanks.

Hi Otterfield.

Thanks for writing. I’m sure there’s a connection, but doctors say no. Thick blood tires out your veins.

I exercise with my compression socks. I have sheer ones for dresses, open toe for summer, travel anf/or sport compression socks. I get most from internet. Important is to measure exactly the ankle, widest part of calf and length of lower leg. They are amazing and I’ve never had cold feet again. Make sure they don’t squeeze you toes. Toes have to feel free.

All the best to you. Anag

Hi Anag, thank you for this. It is really helpful to hear your experience. In the first instance my GP will be prescribing, but I do prefer the idea of choosing my own online.

All the best to you too,

Otterfield

Make sure you get to a professional for the initial testing and measuring. Once you know the ropes, you’ll be able to choose. Make sure the socks have a shaped heal else you will get colds on top of your ankle and they deter circulation.

So glad my info was useful!

Thank you again, Anag. Luckily my GP is really supportive and I'm confident he will point me in the right direction for measuring etc. I will make sure they have a shaped heel.

No doubt I will have more questions for you as time goes by!

I was actually, it extended to my feet. Are you taking any pain meds? I found my swelling was related to that and it went away.

Hi everyone thanks for all your replies, sorry it’s been so long replying, been looking after my mother in Yorkshire. In answer to some of your suggestion, my blood pressure is fine, but I am going to have another Doppler test, to check thinks are ok. Will keep you posted. Due to away this weekend, flying to Bulgaria, slightly worried about being in crowded spaces, what’s people’s thoughts on the virus? X
