Anyone have horrible side effects to amoxicillin 875 mg 2 times a day

Hi I have been healthy but on New Year's I want into urgent care for a sinus infection and got amoxicillin 875 mg 2 times a day and ever since then the infection went away I don't have headaches anymore I don't need 10 hours of sleep I feel great. however I am a person who has bowel movements about half-a-dozen times a day and ever since taking that medication which was my first time ever I believe I have been messed up for about 6 weeks and running I cannot go to the bathroom it is a struggle to and the same thing happened to me about two years ago when I was given Augmentin 875 mg 2 times a day which I told them not to give me but this amoxicillin looked almost the same just a pink color not white and it has the exact same effect. Any tips on reversing the issues. From struggling to have movements I have given myself hemorrhoids which will pop and break but then it seems like new ones appear because every time I go to the bathroom it's a struggle and pretty much nothing comes out after all that straining or I feel as if nothing came out and quite a bit did. And for even more kicks it takes 3 weeks to get into a GI specialist which I have an appointment for in March not until March. it is so hard to have these pains in your stomach like rocks are coming out or when you go to the bathroom I feel like I have anxiety and want to cry every time I enter a bathroom because I know how painful it's going to be. Thankful for any info

HI Mochapie, I am sorry you are having these problems, very distressing for you. It might be worth seeing your doctor as soon as you can about this as they will be able to advise you on ways to help with this problem with your bowel movements. Best wishes, Maz

You need to see your GP or failing that a pharmacist. The are over the counter medications that can ease your problems while you are waiting to see a specialist.

Over the counter stool softener called Dulcoease and lots of water will help

So sorry to hear of your issues. I am PV with Jak2 mutation. If you are on HU, it causes gastro issues by itself. The addition of the amoxicillin is a double whammy. Both kill the good and the bad - HU affects your gut bacteria and so does amoxicillin. You need to replace the “dead” bacteria with a good probiotic to help the good bacteria regrow. In the meantime, make sure you are staying well-hydrated. Best of luck - living with any MPN is a true balancing act.

My doc always says - You can live with MPN; you will die with MPN; you seldom die FROM your MPN.

Antibiotics can damage the microbiome in your gut, causing constipation. Antibiotics are notorious for this. Replacing the good bacteria in your gut is critical to recovery. Finding a high quality probiotic can make a huge difference in recovery from what is ailing you. If you are also on hydroxyurea, be aware that this med can also cause constipation by compromising your intestinal endothelium. So a different mechanism, but same effect. It is absolutely dreadful when you get a double-whammy (this happened to me too). HU +_ diltiazem was like a giant cork with superglue! Oh brother! Lets don't even talk about opioids and iron pills.

Here are some of the things that help

1. Change your diet. Eat whole grains only. Increase intake of roughage. Eat fruits that are rich in sorbitol (plums, prunes, etc) as sorbitol is a natural osmotic laxative. Daily yoghurt can also help as can fermented prebiotic foods (sour kraut, kimchi, etc)

2. Take a high quality probiotic. Change what you take periodically to increase diversity.

3. Drink plenty of fluids. Your gut needs it more than ever. Prune juice (yuck) really does help. Coffee does a swell (in moderation). And of course - plain old water.

4. You can use osmotic laxatives like Docusate and MiraLax safely. They can also be used together. This aid does not produce dependency as what it is doing is to move more water into your gut.

5. When all else fails, you can use as stimulant laxative like Senna. This is something you need to be careful with as you body can become dependent on stimulant laxatives. When things got that bad, I usually tried a Senna tea (e.g. Smooth Move) first, though I doubt it really matters.

I hope that helps.

Do you feel better now? Took also augmentin and it gave me a very bad diarrhea. Started on 2nd day of antibotics and continued until 8th day. Got better after couple of days then the diarrhea is back again. Took two weeks before I got better but now i think it gave me hemorrhoids. Had checkup and the doctor wants to do colonoscopy

Yes I had the same thing the massive antibiotics gave me GI issues and I was struggling so much just to have a bowel movement that I actually created an umbilical hernia and yes I seen a GI he said you have no hemorrhoids at the moment but he was suspecting that I did have them it's almost like if you take an antibiotic it will get rid of the issue but it creates a whole new series of issues and he did want to do a colonoscopy but I didn't ever do it I did a by mail swab kit and that came back okay but sometimes even a year later I still do struggle to go to the bathroom where I was completely and utterly regular now I need Colace at least once or twice a week just to help me along I don't do good with Miralax or Dulcolax
