Hi Steve this is very interesting. I have been taking curcumin for about 2-3 years and my platelets have never been better - they are in normal range. I have been able to halve my hydroxy too. In addition the pain from my arthritis is significantly less - bonus!
That is really interesting to receive yet another very positive response from MPNers using Curcumin...
I am also taking the Bioglan version myself, regularly but at alternate times to my other Med's etc.
I am now trialling Low-dose 10mg pw Methotrexate (MTX), because my Platelets kept rising to dangerous levels 900s-1M and I was becoming most concerned...
Happily, the last tow (2) bloods showed significant Platelets reductions: 893 & 832. Hgb 132 & Hct0.41. Reds still a tad low. However, the Folic Acid I am also now taking daily (except on MTX days), seems to also be aiding my anaemia...
This last week, in particular, I have rarely felt stronger since diagnosis... Miraculously contrasting to just weeks ago where I was growing most concerned about my abilities to keep cycling... I was suffering from O2 deprivation, and starting to feel that maybe I would not be able to do my Fundraiser after all...
Fast-Forward to today, and that is just no longer the case...
Out cycling another long one 100kms+ tomorrow I hope...
Hi Steve glad to hear your platelets are reducing. Enjoy your bike ride. My husband has just been diagnosed with prostrate cancer and has decided to start taking curcumin too. Fingers crossed it helps 🤞
Hi, I always believe the power of Curcumin, I have been taking Hydrea as well as blood thinner, would you mind telling me how much Curcumin are you taking daily?
Hi, I take the maximum dose recommended of the brand I use ( Aava Labs), which is 6 capsules containing in total 570mg curcumin plus 30mg of black pepper extract which includes 28.5mg piperine to help absorption.
I take 75mg clopidogrel daily since my stomach cannot tolerate aspirin. Unfortunately both aspirin and clopidogrel are toxic to our kidney and liver, I hope I can take Curcumin instead of the blood thinners.
I was on clopidogrel a few years ago but it caused terrible mouth ulcers. You would need to speak to your specialist about whether it’s possible to replace it with curcumin. I can’t imagine they would agree though
It's really quite astounding as we can all have such similarities and yet also harbour completely contrasting responses to a range of different chemical cocktails etc...
Enteric-coated made no different to me unfortunately, it still hurt my stomach badly, since then I have been taking clopidogrel that doesn't hurt my stomach, although it is just as toxic as aspirin to our kidney and liver.
Thanks for posting. I’m simply responding to this in order to add further explanation.
I asked my son, who is a genetic research scientist, to review this for me and see if it would be advantageous. This is his response:
‘Well, a couple of things...this study is mainly on PGV-1, which is only _related_ to curcumin thats found in turmeric. Curcumin itself isn’t a good drug (they state "However, because of limitations in the properties of curcumin, which include low solubility in water, low absorbance from the gut, and low stability in vivo etc., curcumin has never been a versatile anti-cancer drug for humans). They showed that curcumin has little effect on tumours when taken orally, but maybe this PGV-1 may work, but it’s better via injection.
Secondly, this is only in cell lines. They inject the cancer in to a mouse, so its not even a study in real human cancer. Most drugs don't transition from the petri dish or a mouse in to human studies.
It’s interesting from a basic science viewpoint, but still many many years from a usable drug.’
He then adds...
‘Saying that, no reason we shouldn't be eating lots of curries! 😁
Thanks for another interesting article. I take curcumin in oil and with black pepper to aid absorption. All I can say is that I have been able to reduce my hydrox three times since I started taking cucumin -next blood test in a couple of weeks, so fingers crossed.
So pleased the Methotrexate is making a positive impact and you can continue cycling.
Yes, I am tending to lean on the Positive side of this discussion myself, where the Curcumin is concerned. While there seems to be an issue of efficacy where the 'bioavailability' is concerned... Overall... everyone's reports seem to suggest that they are mostly deriving benefits through the additional inclusion, and that has to be seen as a Positive, in my lay view...
Yes, I am stoked just at the present with the effects of how well the MTX is working for me at the moment... Hopefully, it will continue to remain a positive influence etc... I hasten to add that I am taking Curcumin (Bioglan) intermittently too...
I shall keep everyone Posted as to how things continue to progress...
Hopefully, others too might talk to their medical teams about whether MTX might help maintain their MPNs too...
Would be so nice to have another Med's Option available, well at least for some of us MPNers. Alternative options seem so few etc...
