Hydroxy effecting Haemoglobin and RBC

Age 35

Taking Hydroxy since 1.7 years

Last 4 weeks taking Hydroxy : 6500/week (1500+ 1000+ 1500 + 1000+1500 off off) for last 2 weeks)

JAK 2 negative

Today’s blood report not good

Haemoglobin: 13.4 g/dl (gown down in 3 months from 14.5)

RBC : 4.04 x 10E12/L ( down from 4.24 in 3 months)

Platelets: 692 x 10E9/L ( mostly ranging between 500 to 800)

Any advise? Is that a reason of not eating healthy and not doing any exercise at all ?

Is it time to switch to Interferon ?

What you guys think of report ? Its getting bad ?

I'm not well versed enough to comment on your levels but I recently had to half my Hydroxycarbamide at weekends after my GP noticed my red blood cells were too low and I was anaemic. My breathlessness was bad and I was so tired. I went to my GP with headaches that lasted days. He contacted my consultant who advised I adjust my meds slightly and after a few weeks my headaches have gone and I do feel a little better. It's a juggling act currently and I await my next bloodtest to see how my platelets have been affected. I had had a long spell where everything was within normal range. My diet is not as good as it should be but I do try and I go to exercise classes twice a week as well as walking my dog every day and still find time to do a good impression of a sloth on my sofa most days. It's about balance right? Haha!

I'm sure your Consultant will advise if your levels are not right, don't be afraid to ask. I wish you well.

Taking hydroxyurea will reduce hemoglobin. The red blood cells get larger and the number will go down. That said the changes you report may just be random variation. Only your doctor can put the numbers in context. Are your symptoms and side effects changing? If not, the doctor should interpret the blood counts and make any necessary adjustments in your medication.
