Jury Duty

Has anyone with ET been given exemption from Jury Duty? Although I class myself as fairly fit, there are so many reasons I don't feel able enough to do this. Chemo brain, forget things so easily and sometimes find it hard retaining information, fatigue, which I notice is brought on by stress as well as trying to do too much. Meds the Doc has me on for sleeplessness, means I don't function before 10a.m. Then there is sometimes breathlessness which arrives whenever it pleases.

I worked for the Crown Prosecution Service in the Crown Court (Now retired) Its up to individual judges to decide to exempt any jurors . Most judges want people who are happy to provide this service and feel able to do the job well, if you explain your health issues you will be exempted. You may need to go along on the day. Usually depending on the case there will be as many as 50 jurors of which 12 will be picked.

Thanks for your reply Raphael, something I would have found interesting previously.

Hi I wrote a letter explaining why I would be unable to do, said that they could refer to my GP for confirmation, also having to drink so much water was another factor and needing visits to the loo. They were really good and have exempted me from Jury service.

That's good to know Jean. I didn't say in my post but the water/loo visits were also a worry for me too. I did visit my Doctor's surgery today and hopefully he will give me and exemption certificate to send to the Court.

If not just write to them.

Your doc could formally recommend suspension for those reasons?

I'm living in New Zealand so things may be a little different here, but a year or two ago I was required to do jury service. I definitely was too unwell to attend. I had to obtain a letter from my GP asking that I might be exempt from service. I think she also had to sign an official form of some kind. I was successful in being excused which was a huge relief.

Hi stillkicking, i also received jury notice and there was a form to tick option of permanent excusal. I only needed to attach a copy of diagnosis. Got a letter back to say i was permanently excused but needed to repeat process if i moved house due to electoral roll change.
