I'm booked to have a parathyroid gland removed on November 28th. I saw the surgeon yesterday and asked her whether I had to stop taking aspirin before the surgery and she said no, continue to take it...which is different to the advice I've read on this site.
My next hematology appointment isn't until the 26th November, so I don't really want to leave it until 2 days before the operation to find out that I really should have stopped the aspirin a few days before.
The surgeon saw my badly bruised arms from a venesection the week before so she saw how much I bruise after a small procedure.
I'm happy about having the surgery as hyperparathyroidism is making me feel so ill. I'm obviously worried about surgery complications due to PV.
Anyone have any advice?

Hi Kari, I’ve only had Orthopaedic ops but plenty of them. Each time I get my bloods checked a few days beforehand and for the bigger ops, like my new knee my haematologist and surgeon spoke to one another prior to the op. I wasn’t on aspirin so can’t help you there but I would contact your haematologist and voice your concerns so you are sure your surgeon understands your condition.
Please do this otherwise you will worry and that’s not good for you, going in for an op. Hope everything goes well, keep in touch.
I think if you have specifically asked the surgeon about stopping aspirin you are probably safe to go with their reply. My only thought would be that the thyroid gland is located very close to the surface of the skin and it’s not like a deep tissue operation ie, abdomen etc. I had half my thyroid removed years ago befor PV diagnosis and just had metal clips to close. ( looked like Frankenstein‘s monster for a week or so). I also had a tooth removed earlier this year and asked the heam about stopping aspirin and he said no need.
Good luck with the op and I hope you end up feeling loads better.
Hi Kari, I was told to continue with Aspirin when I had my breast Lumpectomy operation in July. However as I started Hydroxycarbamide after the operation I had to ask if I should continue the Hydroxy while having Radiotherapy and have been taken off it ? I am still on aspirin and having my radiotherapy at present. I was diagnosed with ET in July.
