Cancer!

Hello everyone. I haven’t posted for a while. I’ve been taken off hydroxycarbamide as I am having treatment for bowel cancer. ( radiotherapy only! )The funny thing is that my platelets are now normal 🤷🏽‍♀️ and have been for a few weeks. I haven’t seen my haematologist as I have been traveling back and forward to Newcastle for cancer treatment but the colorectal specialist seems happy.

Hi Juliet. I'm sorry to hear of another health issue. I hope all is going well and you will soon be back to good health. That is interesting that your platelets have returned to normal , long met they continue to behave themselves.

With very best wishes to you . Sandy x

Hi Juliet I have et and had breast cancer so had radiotherapy I was on interferon to lower my white blood cells, I insisted on coming of the interferon because radiotherapy lowers white blood cells as well this was fiv3 years ago and I haven’t needed any treatment for my et since .

I’m also on radiotherapy but had to stop taking the chemo because of a reaction. My platelets had actually fallen before the radiotherapy started but hopefully they will stay down now. Thanks for replying and stay well !

Hi, I am starting Radiotherapy on 22nd October having had breast cancer Lumpectomy. Had to enquire about stopping Hydroxycarbamide as Haematologist left it to me to ask Radiotherapy doc. She advised me to stop it immediately and I think is having a word with Haematologist. I have only been on it just over two weeks! Apparently there is a risk of a nasty skin reaction after Radiotherapy if going back on Hydroxy too soon and it has to be monitored carefully. As we are both in the same boat as it were with cancer too I would be interested in your experience when your Radiotherapy is finished. My MPN is ET. Platelets were around 800 at last appointment. Previously 600 on 1st consultation but he said the rise was because of my breast operation. He also said the blood cancer was not connected to the breast cancer at all. I wish you well with your treatment and quick recovery.

Hello Yes they said my ET wasn’t connected to bowel cancer, don’t know if I’m convinced ! Yes I will let you know how I get on, only on week 2. The worst thing so far is the 120 mile round trip to Newcastle to have the radiotherapy . Good luck to you !

Oh that's a long round trip. Hope it's not for too many weeks! I'm attending James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, fortunately just about 40 mins round trip . How many weeks do you have to do? I have 3 Monday's to Friday's. Are they checking your blood at Haemo during this time?

Hi Juliet46, I have just come across several websites which say that high Platelets are a strong predictor of Cancer and patients should be investigated! Interesting!

Yes I have no evidence just a hunch that there’s a connection. Thanks for replying !

Sorry to hear about the bowel cancer -I hope the radiotherapy doesn't cause too much discomfort. I was wondering about your long journey -is this through choice or necessity? But good to hear the platelets are behaving so well! Best wishes

Hi Juliet, when you visit the Freeman make sure you pop I into Maggie's just outside the cancer treatment entrance. This is wonderful place and you will receive a friendly welcome its all bright and cheery. A coffee and a chat before you set back home. It's free a small donation welcomed by the wonderful staff. There's a cosy kitchen a quiet library room and lovely decor and nice gardens. Best wishes Ivy x
