Keto Diet and MF

Been on the Keto Diet for about 3 months now. Went for my 6 monthly visit to my Hemo.

Red blood cell has count has gone from 90 to 115 since the last test. It was 107 when diagnosed 3 years ago and has has consistently pretty much dropped every 6 months since diagnosis.

This is the only thing that has altered in my life style other than retiring 16 months ago and going on the Keto 3 months ago

He was surprised and said that he hadn't heard of any link between the Keto and any effect on MF but did say that fat isn't the big enemy that it is said to be but said that it can have health implications in some people but in his opinion sugar was bad news.

We started the Keto after watching "The magic pill" on Netflix. Watch it and make up your own mind but I'm going with the Keto !

My partner has noticed improvement in her joint health as well. More mobility and less pain/discomfort

Guy

That's really interesting Guy. I'm on a range of Chinese and Japanese mushroom supplements that come via a Doctor recommended to me by someone who had Leukaemia. So far so good. I'm the sort of person who likes to be proactive with my health and so psychologically it's good for me to take action as I feel I can work in partnership with the Haematology as well as receiving a lot of care and support from the Integrative Medical specialist I'm working with. Its good to hear what others are doing so thank you for sharing this.

Hi AnitaJ

Yes I can't help but think these illnesses are caused or activated by our processed and spray contaminated foods. We live in an area of New Zealand which is big in horticulture and the corresponding sprays. NZ is moving more towards organic quite quickly and I can't help thinking this is a leap in the right direction. Natural interventions have to be the best option when they are available and work. A leap in my red blood cell count from 90 to 115 in 6 months has to be caused by something. As someone said we are what we eat and maybe we are missing simple answers and preferring the pills option. The Keto Diet is easy. Maybe some of the answer is equally easy.

What type of Mushroom supps do you take. Chinese medicine is not uncommon here but I have never come across Japanese medicine here.

Hi Guy, I take a range of powders and capsules namely:

Cordyceps with 5 % cordycepin

Coriolus

Snow fungus

Broken spore reishi 8 % triterpenoids x powder

Astragalus ( 5 : 1 extract )

Chaga

Vit C

CoQ10

Blue-Green Algea

Alkalising blend

They are prescribed and tweaked whenever I have my Skype call with the Integrative Med. Dr. My consultants know about them and just asked me to stay off them when they changed my meds to Interferon and then reintroduce, which I did.

When you refer to your red blood cell count do you actually mean your haemaglobin? The numbers you are quoting would suggest that this is the case? I was on Dr Atkins diet for quite a while since being diagnosed. Does the Keto diet follow much the same principles? I did lose weight on it but I didn’t notice much, if any, difference in my blood counts. However it is some time ago and I don’t have those records still so there might have been some change that I did not associate with what I was eating. I now mostly live on fresh fruit and veg and fish and chicken. My MF is progressing and my haematologist suggests I stay on the supposedly healthy diet that I have now. I am on quite a few different medications that I’m sure play just as much havoc with our bodies as our diet.

I am glad you have found something that works for you. Even if it not the Keto diet that is affecting your counts then feeling better is probably more than 50% of the battle against out chronic conditions

Best wishes, Jan

Hi Jan

Yes I am talking about hemoglobin. Also it is probable that my blast count has remained under 1%. Also no growth in my spleen has shown yet. The Keto Diet is similar in that it is very low cards. So no grains, veg that grow below the ground, rice, legumes, limited peas beans etc but high in leafy greens. No additional sugars, processed foods and very limited fruit etc. High in natural fats and animal fats,39% of daily food intake is fat, and only oils that are extracted by cold pressing such us olive and high quality peanut oil and avocado oil. Eggs good potatoes bad. I also have a lot of curry type spices such as tumeric cooked off in fat to activate it. No use unless you do this with it as not absorbed/processed by the body.

Google it as it is quite well known and covered.

Not a hard diet and bacon and eggs for breakfast on low carb or paleo toast is no hardship. Curries with no rice or Naan no problem.

Worth a try I think? So rip into the pork belly roast with extra salt and crackling!

Kindest regards

I have ET, on Hydroxy and aspirin. My weight has gone up steadily in the five years since I retired and I reached Obese BMI last month and had a panic.

I signed up for Forward to Health (£36.50 for 3 months) at the local sports centre, which includes Gym, swimming, Tai Chi and other classes. I bought a basic fitbit, £37.99, and Dr Michael Mosley’s book on the low carb diet, downloaded to kindle.

I got DH to join in the exercise for support and encouragement.

All of the above seem to be working, I have reversed my sugar addiction, got up off the couch, and lost 12 pounds, without feeling hungry or counted a calorie.

My next blood check is in three months.

Good on you and it seems to be working really well for you as well. If you happy and content and know what you are doing is having a positive effect on your health then it is working.! The mind is a great motivator and provider of cures and general wellbeing so go for it. Check out the Keto Diet and the science behind it. You may choose to try it but if not I think there is some interesting info for everyone as well.what we are doing works for both you and me and will do so for many more. Keep in touch and let us know how the next blood count goes.

There is future for all of us and we need to remember what's good and move on from the negatives. We are alive and will continue to be so for a long time yet!

Do keep in touch!

Kindest regards

I have done three months on Low Carb Healthy Fat, and have continued with Gym, swimming, Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates at the local sports centre, with a second Forward to Health membership for £42 for 3 months, and walking 10,000 steps a day.

I have lost 2st 6lbs going from obese to 1lb off a normal BMI, and losing 6 inches off my waist.

Yesterday my platelets had gone down, and for the first time I can reduce my Hydroxycarbamide, to 1,000 for six days and a day off on Sundays.

I feel very well. BP is down, my joints no longer ache, my muscle tone has improved, and the wretched hearburn has gone completely.

Borage, that’s fantastic! I feel ashamed at how little exercise I do, apart from walking. You have inspired me to look into other things now.

Well done

Judy x

Great news! I am still on the Keto and feeling very well. Next blood tests are not until December so will know more then. It is fantastic that you are doing so well. I am maintaining my weight in the normal range which is good as weight loss is problem/symptom of MF.

Again great news and good on you for sticking with it

Kindest regards

Guy
