Complexion

Another quite trivial post from me, but usually get such good advice! Has anyone’s complexion gone really blotchy, dry , spotty and generally unhealthy looking . If so, how do you treat it? As the hydroxycarbamide dosage has increased, my skin has definitely deteriorated.

Thankyou

Hi Juliet, yes Hydroxy can cause skin problems and cause dry skin, a rare side effect is skin discolouration, and less common side effects: skin rash and facial redness so it could be possible this is why your complexion is like it is. Do you make sure that you use a good sun block cream all the time, you do need to take care in the sun and use a high factor sun block and wear a hat as Hydroxy does make your skin more prone to the effects of the sun. It is also a good idea to use sun block on your face and neck all year round when you are outside as even on a dull day the damaging rays do get through from the sun. Try using more moisturiser and possibly one with a good SPF rating and see if this helps. If it gets too bad then speak to your haematologist about it as they may be able to help, or your GP. Maz

Hi Maz what is the skin discolouration? I’ve tried google but can’t find the answer. Sometimes I look really tanned.

there is nothing specific about it, but some people have said they get brown blotchy spots and patches. Maz

I had a facial the other week and it’s made a real difference. My skin was really grim. I feel that for purely medical reasons I should do this more regularly. 😂😂.

I’ve yet to find a facial sunscreen I really like. I’m using the Roche Posay 50+. It’s quite moisturising but I’m not convinced it’s blocking the sun. Unless it’s really warm out I put serum and moisturiser underneath. But I really don’t like wearing sunscreen daily. I always wear a moisturiser with SPF for a little protection.

I have some neat looking UV clothing winging its way from Australia right now - a wrap and a cardi wrap thing. Let’s see how that turns out. Hoping that might be more successful and user friendly than smearing white liquid over everything!

Thanks for your reply! I’ve been thinking about a facial for a while so I think I’ll book it!

Hi Ebot,

I’ve just come back from holiday in the canaries and used factor 50 the whole time on my body and La Roche Posay on my face, like you, I’m not sure that it blocks the sun. I’m quite tanned and spent a lot of time in the shade so I’ll don’t even think the factor 50 on my body worked that well! I’m due to have a ‘thing’ cut off the back of my hand on Tuesday. Hate to think what the dermatologist will say when she sees my suntanned arms!😗😗 probably a lecture I think. 😂

Interested in you UV clothing. Please post a pic when you get it.

Hope you are well and that we will be able to meet sometime in the summer hols.

Love Judy x

Yeah, I wouldn’t want to undergo too close an inspection by a dermatologist! 😱.

The UV protection clothing company is called Solbari. Maybe our Aussie friends will be familiar with it. It’s not exactly cheap but I thought worth a try. And it looks everyday wearable rather than working the surf dude / going on safari vibe.

We should definitely aim to meet up this summer. I’ll PM you when I know dates. Xx

Hi Juliet, yes to the skin issues. I have PV and not on any meds yet but have blotchy red marks on face and light brown patches too. I was blaming PV but will definitely take Maz’s advice about sun cream.

Kindest regards

Aime
