Hi question for people with PV was at the hospital a week ago and blood levels fine apart from hematocrit which was 47% how long do people generally wait to have a venesection as still don’t have an appointment for this
Venesection : Hi question for people with PV was... - MPN Voice
Venesection
Hi Badger1,
My blood is tested at the hospital immediately before my consultation and if a venesection is required I have it straight after, however from my nest appointment I have to have the blood test done at my GP within the week before my hospital appointment. If a venesection is needed they will then so it while I'm at the hospital, so I guessing a week is fine. After all, we wouldn't know how long it had been raised if appointments are 3 months apart as mine are.
Best wishes

At Guy’s you get venesected there and then if your blood results indicate you need it. I usually make an appointment in the day unit for an hour or so after my clinic appointment and then they just cancel it if I don’t need it. But even if I haven’t had an appointment, like when I was first diagnosed, they just do it automatically. Having flagged a need for it, I’d want it done pretty pronto!
I live quite a distance from the hospital I attend, so everything is done on the same day. Every eight weeks, I go straight to the lab, then see the MacMillan specialist nurse and if necessary (which is always the case), I then go for my venesection. I allow the whole day for my appointment as there can be quite a bit of waiting and long corridors in between. The restaurant in the hospital is good and my wait spans lunch time. I get my next appointment and blood form from the nurse and make my appointment for later on the appointment date for a venesection. Although there is a lot of waiting, for me it is easier than making an extra trip to the hospital. I hope your appointment can be sorted out to be convenient for you.
normally a week but I have gone 3 weeks when holidays have interferred. I cant see why the nurse at the GP practise cant do it , apparently getting rid of the blood gives them a problem and they wont give it to me for the roses, In the old days of regular bleeding the doc had the best roses in town.
Roses eh? Hadn’t thought about that. Am now wondering about the ‘rose’ wine my mother-in-law bought once at a village fete. She decided that the lack of an accent over the ‘e’ in ‘rose’ was merely an oversight. Apparently not. The vicar gathered the petals from the funeral wreaths and bouquets ........
P.S. On a serious note. It’s possible the GP nurse cannot venesect. The young nurses up at Guy’s tell me they are no longer taught to do so in training. It’s not until they are qualified and get down on the Haem Day Unit that they see a venesection needle. Apparently that gives them a degree of one upmanship back on the ward!
Hi Badger1,
I'm same as a few other people who have replied.
I have my blood tested before I see the haematologist, then if the reading is higher than 45 I have Venesection straight away.
Maybe give your specialist nurse a call?
Best wishes

I saw my Haematology Doctor last week for my annual check up in outpatients, my Haematocrit was .47 she wanted me to go for a venesection then, but as I see my nurse in the Haematology department at the end of November I said I will wait until then to have the venesection, as by then my Haematocrit will have gone up higher and they would give me another venesection. I generally have a venesection every 3 months so I try to avoid to many needles being put in me as my veins have hardened up over the years. If this is your first blood let I would have thought they would have done it then. If you don't here within another week I would contact them to see what's happening.
Best wishes

I have my blood test done and then immediately see my haematologist. If I need a venesection she tries to get me into the Medical Day Unit straight away, but if they are busy it is usually within 2 or 3 days.
Thank you for the reply’s time to get in touch with the hospital !!!!!!!👍👍👍👍💉💉💉💉
Looking forward to reading answers
My PCV was .545 when I saw haematology last week. No venesection but back in 3 months! Hb at 180!
