I was just diagnosed with this on Tuesday. My doctor told me to take a baby aspirin and quit smoking. That's all he said before he showed me to the door, without having me schedule another appointment. Any and all advice would be very appreciated!

New Diagnosis
Go to MPN voice.co.uk and also the Macmillan site and learn as much as you can, your haematologist should have provided you with the info to help you understand more.
Additionally go through the previous questions posed in here to see some of the areas you have yet to think about.
I would say find out as much as you can before your next appt as you will find most Haematologists are certainly not experts in this field. Lastly chase the haematology dept for a further appt, armed with knowledge you will be able to ask pertinent questions re your diagnosis and treatment.

Thanx Gerard, my GP gave me the results and basically sent me out the door, without scheduling another appointment or any information. I'm trying to get information to figure out what to do and what kind of doctor to see next.
Hi, I wonder if you have secondary polycythaemia - which can be reversed by stopping smoking etc - or polycythaemia rubra vera which is caused by a genetic mutation and can't be cured????
You should certainly have a follow up appointment to check your platelet levels. The aspirin stops them being sticky but doesn't reduce them. You need further info from the doctor so you know the way forward.

Hi, what MPN were you diagnosed with? Maz
I have an appointment September 20th, 7:30am, in Monroe,Michigan, USA. With Dr. Trevedi, oncologist/hematologist. My primary care physician basically showed me to the door after he gave me my results. So, I'll know much more than.
