Holidaying at altitude

It's a month till my haematology appointment and I was thinking of asking my Haematologist about holidaying at altitude. Can anyone tell me what the risks are? I have ET but I am only on aspirin at the moment. I may go on a skiing holiday at altitude next year. Are there any precautions I should take?

I was planning a month in the Ethiopian Highlands but was advised by my haem that it could trigger 'an underlying problem'. I checked this at one of the MPN Voice Forums and was basically told (or I inferred) that length of time was a factor .. I got the impression a week/possibly 2 would have been acceptable/better.

I am over 70 and on HU although my platelets are satisfactorily controlled. Hope this helps.

Hi Sue,

I'm PV JAQ2 positive I go skiing every year I don't find it a problem as long as I take my Aspirin and HU tablets. It is the flying that causes me most problems but going to the alps is not a long flight. I put on my flight socks which helps.

Best wishes

John

Hi Sue. I have PV and have been skiing a couple of times with my illness, although a little more tired than before, I had no problems and I didn't even think to ask my heam. I even skied the olympic run which was on my bucket list. Life is to be enjoyed and skiing is one of the most enjoyable pursuits. Have the best time. Mel x

Hi Sue - I've skied several times since being diagnosed 13 years ago and been up to 13,000 feet for a few days on holiday with no issues.

As far as I'm aware altitude in itself shouldn't be an issue but worth asking your doctor as our situations are all different. Normal precautions such as keeping well hydrated etc can't do any harm - especially in warm weather or strenuous exercise.

I've always used flight socks over about 2.5 hours and heparin when flying long haul just to be safe - again your specialist can probably advise on that.

Enjoy your holiday..!
