I suffer with chronic phlegm at the back of my throat which I cannot easily cough up or clear. I used to use Sudafed pretty regularly which I am reluctant to use now because of HBP and my medication (hydroxycarbamide and aspirin). Is there a safe alternative? I drive everyone to distraction with my continual dry coughing, gulping and losing my voice. All my GP prescribes is steroid nasal sprays which do nothing to help.

Can anyone tell me if it is safe to take a decongestant such as Sudafed.
Hi CrazyDaisy, sorry to hear about your cough, you could ask your pharmacist for some advice about the Sudafed. Best wishes, Maz.
Hi CrazyDaisy,
Our pharmacist looked into taking other medication with hydroxycarbamide and he couldn't find anything that it shouldn't be taken with, but please ask your own pharmacist to be on the safe side.
With kind regards, Lorraine
Hi CrazyDaisy, I found that sucking a sugar free pastille, made for the dry mouth caused by chemotherapy, really helped. I don't remember the make, the Company Rep at Primary Care in Birmingham gave me enough for a few months. Eventually this side effect, like the mouth ulcers and the skin crawling itching, have gradually gone away.
Herb teas may help.
Best wishes,
Borage
Hope you are feeling better now. Not sure what you take with HU but do know the if using Interferon you have to check everything. Interferon can react with many drugs.
