Avoid topiramate and give up dairy instead

God no. If you weren't in school, have a job, or have any responsibilities, then I'd say take this med. You will feel like your head is in a cloud and can't even remember what you had for breakfast, let alone remember everyday things.

My suggestion is to give up all forms of dairy for 30 days and see how you do. It must be all forms. For me, on day 11 of giving up dairy, my 27 year battle with migraines finally stopped.

Gysolohate (Round-up) is also a trigger for me. I avoid all pasta made in the US.

Thanks for your post. I've been afraid to try topiramate for this reason in the past despite being described it.

Removing dairy from my diet is high on my list of things to try next in fighting my chronic migraines. Thanks for the encouragement.

Hi I've tried giving up dairy, flour. Anything with yeast, thing processed, sugar, meat. Meds .you name it I've tried it.

Currently I eat Paleolithic which some call the " caveman diet..Ive been at this for about 6 yrs. It really has made a difference. It can however be a bit pricey but worth it. You learn to be thrifty..check it out its worth a try..

Lots of luck..ceesea

Hi Cindy. I actually never really thought of potential pesticides and chemicals in the food which could be triggering migraines. I wonder if trying an organic products only diet for a few weeks would be worth. I had an intolerance test that showed that I am intolerant to dairy, wheat, yeast, eggs. I have given up on dairy a while ago and I don't regret it, as I find dairy-free 'dairy' products more yummy than the dairy ones. For wheat, yeast and eggs, I keep it to the minimum possible. Didn't make much difference for my migraines but I discovered that I had other health issues triggered by these foods. That said, I believe that for some people an elimination diet has to be kept for longer than 3 months (as recommended) to see any potential improvement.

Thank you for your post and all the best.

Organic is usually glyphosate free.

The reason I suggested 30 days is most people will not contimplate 90 days.

The way I see my own struggle was my body is like an empty cup. Everytime I exposed myself to something that was toxic (dairy, glyphosate, scented products), my cup would fill up. Once I had too much, it would overflow and I'd end up with a migraine.

Now that I've eliminated most of my triggers (can't avoid filling up my car with gas), my cup is almost empty and my goal is to keep it empty.

Topiramate didn't have any effect on me, positive or negative. Gluten free diet made no difference, dairy free made no difference. Botox and CGRP injection helping enormously, everybodies different.

What worked for you besides medicine?

Dis-ease in the body is created by chemicals we ingest, breath in, or expose to our skin.

If you suffer from any kind of illness, request a food sensitivity test. It measures 96 foods and the Food Sensitivity Comprehensive Test measures 204 foods.

It's not the same as a food allergy test.

Aren't you ignoring genetics and childhood trauma/environment though? There is a strong genetic history with my migraines. There are a huge choice of tests you can order from stool samples, hair samples etc they often produce conflicting results that are open to interpretation, they are by no means black and white. Not everything is a result of 'toxins' entering the body we are more complex than that.

Most illnesses are actually caused by what we expose our bodies to.

If you would rather keep ignoring what your body is trying to say, by all means, keep taking meds and suffering. But, please do not discourage others from taking a simple step by eating healthier.

Had just 1 person told me it could be dairy, I would have given it a try and I wouldn't have suffered for more than 1/2 my life.

All my life, I was told my migraines, edema, high cholesterol and high blood pressure was due to genetics. It's a way doctors can keep patients on meds.

Millions of people have reversed their illnesses once they learned the importance of what they eat plays a major role in their health.

If you think about it, you tend to eat what your parents and grand parents ate, therefore it's easy to say "genetics" is the reason.

When my daughter was diagnosed with migraines, they immediately said "oh, your grandmother and mother both got migraines, here take this pill, it's genetics."

Well, she gave up dairy a year ago and has been migraine free ever since.

I believed that the doctors were on my side for 27 long and painful years, but the reality is, they weren't looking out for my best interest, only theirs.

Please watch a few documentaries. You will be amazed at how quickly your body will respond once you stop feeding it toxins.

I think saying that "most illnesses are actually caused by what we expose our bodies to" is a huge sweeping statement and likely to be a massive oversimplification of human health and it is your opinion, not fact.

Even if you were a world leading expert on the matter it would just be an opinion one amongst many. Just because this is your experience of life doesn't mean it applies to everyone. You say I am going to "discourage others" from making "simple" dietary changes when you are doing your best to discourage people from using medication based on a ridiculously paranoid notion that all doctors are evil self serving entities. Which is again another sweeping statement based on emotion rather than fact.

I have gone from roughly 20 days a month of migraine to less than 4 because of the CGRP injection, I don't think just because it has worked for me that everyone should have it and not consider any other options, I just think we need some balance. I have tried exclusion diets, they didn't work for me and I didn't find them "simple", I did find it all very stressful, in fact, but I still don't think that because that's my experience that no one else should try exclusion diets.

While it is very kind of you to provide all this evidence I'm sure you must realise that if I were to start quoting various scientific studies describing research into migraines, gene expression and the like there would not be enough room on the page?
