Hi lynne, sorry should have put full explanation, it is Atrial fribulation & flutter a heart condition....this is why I am frightened to take anything that will make it worse...may just have to put up with the headaches until I see the cardiologist in August.....not sure that some GP's understand the condition ....that is not a criticism, they can't know everything. You take care as well. Jan

Do you have AF or AFL?

Amitriptyline does not cause problem with AFL or even AF directly, probably that's why your GP has prescribed it - they do know these basics :-) However no one knows with 100% certainty what would happen if you take Amitriptyline in addition to other medicines such as Propranolol to control heart rate (and perhaps Anticoagulants too ) while you are in atrial fibrillation. Different people react differently - usually if someone has had heart attack in the past they are advised not to take Amitriptyline.

You are right, this should be your cardiologist's call. But cardiologists do not see migraine as a serious problem, so they will probably ask you not to take Amitriptyline to reduce any risks. On the other hand, if a cardiologist has suffered himself/herself from proper migraine - they will understand why taking Amitriptyline may be required.

It's a complex situation and I don't think there is an easy answer to it. But one thing to note - success rate of Amitriptyline to reduce migraine is poor and it may not reduce headaches. (Sometimes they do work for some people). So please do not get too upset whatever decision is taken by the doctors.

Thank you for your advice....it's nice to have the help from people that have experienced similaŕ problems.....seems like it's a bit of a gamble.
