Concerns over sumatriptan and other triptans - hormonal migraines

I was at the doctors recently regarding bloods taken for low Vitamin D3, whilst at my appointment this new doctor asked about my migraines and why I took sumatriptan, I explained that I have been getting migraines since 2005, they used to be much worse about 20 a month and I am now usually mid cycle, before/during period and occasional stress and lack of sleep induced. He asked me if I knew about triptans causing strokes! Of course I had no idea, triptans feel like a god send for a migraine but now I am really heavily concerned.

I have started the Wim How method, ice showers and breathing and had great relief having an ice cold shower at the onset of a migraine, as long as it isn't a hormonal one, when the showers sadly have no effect on the migraine.

Can anyone point me in the direction of people who have had success kicking hormonal migraines? I really don't want to be taking these white pills anymore, the doctor was really concerned about them and said if I developed a migraine like feeling in my legs or arms to stop taking them immediately, I'm not going to wait for that possibility.

I've never heard of anyone 'kicking' hormonal migraines. Some people find the pill works but it sounds as if yours are triggered by both sets of hormones so extremely unlikely that would work for you.

Sorry but I suggest you talk to a pharmacist rather than the GP about the triptans - yes they can trigger strokes which is why the maximum dose is given on the instructions.

You may find that you don't need a whole dose which would reduce the risk - though if you are adhering to the limits it shouldn't be a particular factor but suggest you check with a pharmacist.

Not a whole lot of research has proven triptans cause stroke or hear pt problems. The initial findings were found to be flawed. Triptans are a miracle cure for about 15 to 20 years, then migraines become daily, get more severe and much longer in duration due to rebound from the triptans. Doctors are not always accurately informed. Getting off triptans is a nightmare.

Hornal migraines are the ones I can never control but I think the link between triptans and stroke or heart issues is only if you have a pre-existing issue in that area. I would be really interested to hear about the Wim How method though!
