Hi there.

I am interested if anyone with migraine also has TMJ Disorder diagnosis? Physio thinks my "transformed" migraine are a symptom of TMJD.

I have yet to get my mouth shield for night time, but am doing exercises and hoping for some reduction in pain.

Made me think as I am a migraine sufferer GP instantly thinks any head pains are migraine or migraine related.

When other conditions can cause/ exacerbate migraine , but if not identified , you treat symptom, but never manage or cure the cause.

I've had a splint for over 20 years still have chronic migraines. Splint saves my teeth but doesn't reduce the pain. Suspect I have bruxism rather than TMJ though.

I am a 30 year migraineur and started to suffer from TMJ 2 years ago after I walked into an unmarked glass door. My dentist prescribed a course of ice, exercises and put me on a soft food diet. The ice exercise regime was very demanding, minimum of 4 times a day and preferably 6 times a day and I lived on boiled eggs and baked apples - but after 3 months I was cured and have had no recurrence . The other thing I found helpful was keeping my head and jaw wrapped in winter. You can get attractive scarves and snuggle your jaw into them or outdoor shops sell a long tubular thing which you pull over your head it covers the whole of the neck and can go right up to just underneath the nose. I lost some weight and like all exercise you will firm up the parts affected and get a better jawline so there are some bonuses. The dentist also sent me to hospital for a jaw X ray to make absolutely sure there was no deeper problem.

I was treated for migraines for 8 years before a physio told me that my joints are hyperflexible and my neck in particular isn't good. She advised exercises to strengthen my neck and shoulders and adjust my posture, which has helped tremendously to prevent the nerves getting trapped and causing the migraines. I've had TMJ a few times and only found out what it was a year ago. The physio suggested I was vulnerable to it because of my hyperflexibility and recommended some specific exercises. Knowing what is causing all these issues has been invaluable with finding the right treatment.

TMJ treatment years ago helped reduce tension headache but didn't stop my chronic headache or migraine. The cause of the TMJ and also the migraine is my scoliosis, which results in overstressed muscles and nerves in my upper back, shoulders, neck and head. Aimovig has given me 90% relief, however.

Thank you folks. I suspect my problem is whiplash related. Def increased headaches which in turn can quickly morph to migraine . I was gobsmacked when I seen all symptoms of TMJ. Only symptom I don't have is clicking jaw .. lol

Of the migraines or TMJ?

I am unable to stop the migraines... yuck

The mouth guard/splint helps a lot. Ice and eating soft foods when I have a flair up. I also try to reduce the amount of Caffeine I drink or drink decaf.

Hope this helps.

All advice helpful and gratefully received. I shall try mouth guard, on soft diet just now and don't do caffeine so won't have to give it up.... Soooo missing a nice crunchy apple.

Gonna get doc to tweak my migraine Botox to help TMJD .

Hope you find some migraine relief.

I have a mouth guard from over the counter you could try this and see if you want to invest in an expensive one from your dentist.
